I have found some old spec sheets on the 304. The one I based my bore stroke @ was 3.75" x 3.44" and I thought it only had 150 hp. Now I checked out a few local garages to here them say I can't produce much more than what she has. They also say that the spec sheet I looked at was wrong, that the 304 produced at best 210 hp. big differance!!!
Anyway what does the 304 produce for the 74 model and can I pull more out of her?
Thanks Guys
I was thinking of swapping for a 590ci Hemi I have seen on mopar.com (900+ hp to start). think she'll fit?

Well Seth pull up a stool and pay close attention....Now the first thing ya gotta remember is there's no substitute for cubic inches...if getting the most horsepower from yer Jeep is your main concern then get a 401. they will bolt up to yer stock tranny cause they 're the same on the outside..BUT they are gettin hard to find AND you'll need a different flywheel.$$$$$. a OEM one from a standard shift ..like from a truck..is near impossible to find HOWEVER you can buy a new one (believe 4wd sells them) and they are big bucks too. the 360 is a good swap cause its a bolt in and you can use the flywheel that you already have......And THEN modify IT.
BUT suppose you wanna stay with the good ole 304 youcan ALWAYS get more power from that baby but you gotta spend some bucks....the old drag racer saying is"speed costs money..How fast do you wanna spend?"
You can start out with a four barrel, intake and headers, dual exhausts too. then go to a different cam and upgrade the ignition(gettin mighty close to that durn fool computer world...hate 'em) but if you get an integrated system for the ignition...hi po coil and all, you can get into some serious horsepower. Now if'n ya wanna go totally nuts, go with a supercharger(yea I've seen one on a CJ 5) :icon312: and/or nitrius oxide.Just like the street racin bunch in tha movies...REMEMBER AMC had some PRETTY hot(read fast) cars in the 1960' and 70's.In other words HORSEPOWER!!!...Hell they even put a V 8 inna Gremlin..........You do know what a Gremlin is donchya..... ?
Now if them specs are really such a beeg deal lemme know an I'll dig out the old AMC JEEP factory issue Tech Manual I have hid out in tha garage an I'll fill your little sponge head with all kinda facts....make ya feel like an ENGINEER or sumpin....just ask man !! I can do it!!....nuff said.

This doesn't answer your question...Mudslinger did a fine job of that, but unless you've boxed the frame on your '74 or are using a after market one, you really don't want too much HP in the intermediate CJ's.
Also, remember that HP ratings changed in the early 70's from "Gross" to "net" HP, so 210 "Gross" HP might equal 150 "net", and this could be where the differences are coming from. I do know that the 304 in J trucks/Wagoners was sometimes rated at higher HP, but this may have been through the use of a 4 barrel carb/intake.
