What are some easy changes I can make to my 96 Sport to increase engine performance?

I would say the airfilter. the stock ones are junk and the cheap ones just don't cut it. My first mod was rustys airtube and K&N cone air filter. I noticed the change right away.

what advantage is there to going with an airtube and cone filter versus a regular replacement K&N Filter?

surface area is the key. The stock box if it's like the 87+ models. only have an airfilter that is I think 3" by like 7 inches I think or about that. and the air intake to get to that airfilter is only a 2 my 3 inch hole. there for your not getting as much air into and thru the air filter.
The cheapes way is to cut open the whole a bit bigger or make more wholes so that more air can get to the A.F.
then you could also change the A.F. that helping more K&N or other performance filters.
Or the air tube. I wish I had picks for ya. Rustys page might have pics.
the cone filter has no box around it so there is no real air being restricted. I've noticed it's helped keep the motor a bit cooler. The cone filter being a cone has nothing but surface space to draw the air into. and the airtube just connects with one bolt to jeep and the cone goes on one end and the other is the hose to the intake.
It is a bit lowder but not much.
I like it and it works great.
but the cheapest I would say is just cust more holes into your box to alow more airflow.
Now there are some draw backs if you do a lot of river crossings then you might be pron to taking on water not good. trick to keep that from happening. THis may sound stupid but it works. Pantie hose. A buddy did this for his tj and his quad and it will help repel water but not keep it out compleatley but yet the air flow thru. kinda crazy but it works. it has to be streached for it to work.

You might also think about doing something like sparkplugs and plug wires, a throttle body spacer is also a good choice when it comes to horsepower and torque when you have a budget, Rock-It PArts from turbo city has a good throttle body spacer, or a helix power tower, otr maybe even power aid. Look at them all I would say.

I agree with WhtXJ, a TBI spacer is good for midrange improvement. Another mod you might want to think about is having the TBI itself milled a little. Even a little more airflow over a long period of time is better than stock.

i'm n my XJ daily for about 150 miles per trip to work & back home plus all the usually errand stuff & as my sig says i've dabled into this realm of XJ performance & have even went as to "clean out my catalytic converter a little" (it was dirty) in my efforts to squeak out an extra MPG or HP & haven't really done much yet it still feels about the same on or off the road & hasn't gained much more than a foot or two in MPGs, I've 8mm racing wires & Bosch Plat. Plus 4 Plugs, & some dopey mod I got off e-bay that was advertised to give up to a 20HP upon install, Huh?! its supposedly telling my coputer that the air coming in the intake is 32degrees F. not any change there either.
on WWW.rockcrawler.com 's bb I posted a similar ? about performance & jason of www.Jeepin.com said that for the most part all of the performance upgrades are basically unoticable, & that the only one that would give a noticable increase would be a bored out Trottle Body (slap leather for about $300) and maybe w/ that include a spacer,
yeah a k&n or powerair or rusty's air tube w/ a high flow filter is going to sound different -- alot different, you ever been @ a drag strip & heard a blower on an engine, at idle's the only time you'll notice it much & it will pay for itself in the long run, cause you can reuse the filter, and each time you pump gas it'll save about $0.02,
so if you really want to save money on gas just don't go so heavy on the pedal on the right- yeah the skinny one,
& if you want cost-effectively gain horse power & torque stomp the skinny one like there's no tommorrow.

heck ya my rustys air tube and K&N filter is way loud right when I turn it on for a bit. it calms down after warm up but it is by far lowder when cold. it's really sucking in the air. and Gas millage ya just keep it light on the peddel. the xj and that ho4.0 is fun to rock here and there but it will suck up the gas like no other. There used to be some home made airtubes you could make for cheep. Let me see if I can find that url.
