I'm slowly removing all the girlie chrome that my jeep'sprevious owner was so proud of. I can't justify paying $200 for a new bumper because I don't like the color either. I have rustoleum primer and flat black paint, but my question is, what is the best way to strip the chrome? Has anybody ever done this before? Any help would be very helpful!
thanks

OneBadSrfr,
You shouldn't strip the chrome. Also, you shouldn't use primer and flat black paint. There is a paint on the market that's called "Bumper Black". I'm not terribly sure who makes it but you should be able to find it at your local autoparts. With that, you just scotch brite (scuff the chrome) bumper and paint right over it. It's tough too. I have a Blazer that I just eliminated the chrome on. Took it out deer hunting, beat the bush, and it came home it real good shape. Check it out, I'm sure you'll like it better than regular paint over chrome.

I'M NOT SURE WHAT KIND OF SHAPE THE CHROME IS IN BUT IF IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE YOU'LL NEED TO SCUFF WITH A PRETTY COURSE SANDPAPER, ABOUT 240 SHOULD DO AND THEN USE A ECTHING PRIMER TO ENSURE THAT WHATEVER PAINT WILL BE USED WILL ADHERE AND LAST LONGER THAN 6 MONTHS OR SO. YOU CAN FIND THE ECTHING PRIMER AT YOUR LOCAL NAPA OR PAINT SUPLLIER.

And make sure you use primer before the paint. Even a good quality paint on a properly preped surface will not last without primer.

Wait a minute, you guy's are misunderstanding. This paint is really that easy. You don't need to primer because the paint is self etching. All you have to do is knock down the chrome with some scotch brite, granted that it has to be thoroughly knocked down, then paint over it. I just got back from my third trip to the bush in my Jimmy and it still looks pretty good. It does have a few scratches but they're surface scratches that didn't reach the metal. I'm telling you, it's called "bumper black" and it works. It's available in high gloss and satin finish. Man, I wish I had the information in front of me. When I used it, I wanted to put it on everything. I personally don't like chrome on an off-road vehicle of any type let alone a jeep.

I'm going to run down to the paint shop that I bought it from and see if I can't get the technical info on it. I'll get back to you with what I find.

OK, I think I've seen what your talking about. Never used it or seen what it looks like on metal though.

This Bumper Black sounds like something I will be looking for. I used a wire wheel on my headlight rings and rear wheel hub covers. The rings still look great but the hub covers have these ugly chrome spots on them. It has been about 4 years since the paint job on my CJ3A. I think I used a brush on the rigs that are painted a copper color, that actually looks gold in the shade and silver in the rite light. It was a color I used on the WILLYS lettering. SInce I am rambling away here, the rest of the jeep is a really good looking ford green I had leftover from my Elcamino.
