as you can probably see from my last couple posts, i have alot of big plans for my YJ, As everyone knows, Jeeps are built not bought!. Anyways, I am currently looking for either a 305 or 350 motor to install. I was wondering if my stock axles would handle the power at all or would the torque just blow it apart? I currently have a 4 cyl. I've heard alot of ppl on hear talk about a Superior axle, what would that be an approx cost of it?

I would recommend at least a 60 rear and a minimum of a 44 front with a built 350. A superior 35 is only stronger axleshafts in your D35. You will still have the small ring and pinion size of the D35, which you will blow to pieces.

I agree, a Superior is a good upgrade, especially for the amount of torque that can be applied from your new motor, in such a short time too.
A Yukon axle upgrade is good too, these are available from Randy's Ring and Pinion for a descent amount of money i.e. about the same as a Superior upgrade.

I don't know where your at but here in calif. I had a ford 9" cut down and the axles re-splined(31 spline) for about 185.00,another 60.00 for bearings. another 500.00 for a ring and pinion and a detroit. So for about 750.00 I got what they will sell you for 2,000.00. The 60's are great but they hang down almost 1" more than a 9". Right now I'm doing a 9" front end in the garage. I'm making it scout width with ford 44 outers.and for axles I'm going to use warn aloy axles. People will say that the 9" is'nt as strong as a d 60. Go to the race track and count the number of 60's that someone put in a car. you wont find any. Have fun

I need to look for parts where you live, nobody has 9-inch rears out here. Seems all of the yards have been picked clean.
Someone else mentioned to me that a Ford Explorer rear end would work too, is this accurate?

Ford 8.8 out of exploders, '96 and up have discs, and it has the 5 x4.5 lug pattern.

Deadpedal, It's my understanding that the Explorer rear is an 8.8.Stength wise I'm not too sure but the parts for them,R/P,lockers and such are limited. The disc brakes can be put on other axles though. Where do you live? Look for axles in Ford vans. They tend to be the least abused and at least around here are all over the place. Almost all one ton vans have a 14 bolt or dana 60 in the rear regaurdless of the brand. This has just been my experience and I only have it because someone else told me. Good luck

8.8 R&P and lockers are far from rare. ARB makes one, as does Detriot.

Hello, I'm in the process of dropping a 305 I built with a 350th tranny in to my 1994 jeep wrangler. I have built my motor to 300 horsepower and I'm going to use my stock axles. Another thing is I took my 4WD out and it is only going to be street driven. So it depends on how you use your stock Dana 35. I know someone that uses his stock rearend and It do's great. He has his 4WD,but he do's not use it much. The engine he has in his 1993 wrangler is a crate motor 350 with 350 horsepower. So really it depends on how heavy your foot is or How much Offroading you do. GoodLuck on your choices.

Burning tires are for the kid's,I grew out of that. Besides tires cost alot these day's. The 2 front tires are attached to the front axle and they are going to work fine. Yes it is going to be 2WD which is not that funny  because I know what I want and I know what I'm doing and it is alway's going to be a jeep only street driven. Sometimes it's said it's a jeep thing you wouldn't understand it. What I say is it's my way you wouldn't understand it. The axles will be fine and they will not snap, because like I said the burn outs are for the kid's or the dragstrip.

You said you removed your 4wd. How can you manage to do that with the axle still in place? Why would you want a Jeep, in comparison gets horrible gas mileage, for street use? It's like wanting a lamborghini for off-road use.

ForGet about it!! The only thing is it is my project, noone elses. I'm doing what I want to. I'm a mechanic with alot of experience, so please quit posting to the same message. Another thing is a jeep is a jeep, it do's not matter what you do with it it is still a jeep and it is going to look like jeep. So please Forget about it.. It is useless to keep on nagging about a post, when your here to talk about jeeps. Thanks. (Let it be the last post about this Topic)

I'm currently doing the same thing with my 95 YJ. I just put a rebuilt 350 into it, and I've been worried about the axles also. BUT, it looks like the 80's models wagoneer used a dana 44 on the rear and the front, and the dana 44 is very strong for that 350. PLUS, the wagoneer front drive shaft is on the same side as the wrangler, unlike chevy or even ford I think. And another thing, if your going to a TH350 Tranny, the gear set on the wagoneers is pretty low, some where around 3.55 or 2.73, so it would make it pretty decent for highway travel.
And as for running a Jeep that's 4x4 on just one drive shaft, I've been doing that for the past 2 years on my Wagoneer with no problem, saves qiute a bit on gas mileage, and gives me a better hole shot at a stop light.
Good luck with the project.......

I am running a 350 in a 93 wrangler with stock axles and have no problems whatsoever!!! I hold the 4 barrels open all the time and race anything that will try.. I also spin the tires allot, which may be childish, but why else do we have a jeep???? Anyway, I have no problems with the rearend, axles, or cops.. Jeeps are Kool..
People will say that the 9" is'nt as strong as a d 60. Go to the race track and count the number of 60's that someone put in a car. you wont find any. You haven't been to any dragstrps, have you?      When Ford sold 3/4 to 1 ton trucks, did they leave the 9" inch in. No!! They went to the Dana 60!! Maybe you should have told them your secret!! The 9s you see at the track have Nodular Iron carrier housings, Daytona pinion supports etc. etc. Lotsa Mopars run D60s at the drag strip into the 9 second bracket, and the center sections are stock, because they came under the car from the factory that way! Put a 9" with a stock carrier & pinion support in that same car, and I guarantee you'll see the pinion walk right out of the carrier.
Enough of the first rant, now back to the thread- Your 350 WILL break your axles on the 35. Maybe not today, maybe not tommorow, BUT IT WILL, AND THE AXLE WILL COME OUT OF THE HOUSING!! There's a good chance it will happen @ a speed above 35mph. If you like that scenario, fine (just tell me when and where you will be driving so I can stay 150mi away) if you don't, just get a XJ or MJ d44 from the boneyard, swap in some 4.10s, and have a nice day. :P

:x Well it finally happened. I broke my rearend this morning on my way to work. I think it was the fact that I got a little over 300hp and I was trying to pull the front tires to show off for a 350 S10. Guess who got to show off!! Not Me!! Stripped all the teeth off the pinion.. I guess if you are going to run much more than a stock 350 you better change the diff. But I did have fun busting that one!!!!!!!!!!

From all of the repair bills you got in your poor D35, you could probably buy a Pro-Rock 60 now.
