This is an old article but worth reading for some of the newer jeepers out there. I used to use hooks tell I read this.

If you are going to use a strap ALWAYS ALWAYS lay your coat over the strap or they make small sand bag pouches that go over the strap to take out the snap, and if it comes loose or breaks, it will just fall to the ground, I have seen straps come through back windows and then through the front window on pickups they are nasty

Anyone ever see a winch line break free and snap back (BTW they ALL come with hooks)... THAT is ugly.

The winch cable, we know you don't have a hook on your tow strap. :)

I've seen a winch cable snap, NOT PRETTY. Thankfully everyone was behind cover when she let go. Took out the front grill and windshield of the truck doing the winching and the rear window of the guy getting pulled out.

My grandfather used to be a diesel mech, tons of stories about tow straps and abused winch cabels coming apart and taking guys out. Only thing that needs to be said is blood, and lots of it is involved when it happens and you're not in the right place.

I've never done the coat over the cable thing, I've alway used a large heavy blanket or a couple of half full sand bags. I just don't see the coat having enough weight to stop things if they snap.

Another important note...

Just because your towstraps dont have hooks attached doesnt mean there safe!!

Another item that needs MAJPR attention is your attachment points.

If you have towhooks mounted to your jeep make sure they have some good sturdy grade8 hardware holdin those puppys down.

If your attachment point goes it will create even more problems. Not only will you have a flying hook 9with hardware) and strap to deal with, but also a busted frame(or where ever you had them mounted to).

"Most" factory mounted hooks are securly attached, but it never hurts to check and make sure everything is in good shape.

Be safe
