i just bought a 89 yj with 2.5 motor and 5 speed manual. does anyone know the best way to get power from this motor, any turbo or supercharger kits available? it has only 31000 miles, so a 350 isn't part of my plan yet. any help is appreciated

I have a '93 with a 2.5. A little more power can be achieved by taking out the airbox and adding a K&N air filter. Also i think Avenger makes a supercharger for them, i havent had the money to even start checking the prices out but i'm sure they have a website. Also, try a Helix power tower in between the air intake and the throttle body. That'll get you some more horses as well. Unfortunatley, those are the only ways i can think of to achieve more power from that little motor. Hope this helps a little bit. Good Luck

Open up the exhaust (High Flow). Dump the cat converter if there's no emission testing in your state. Replace the stock muffler with a glass pack. Get a 4.0L throttle body from the boneyard (bolt pattern is the same), put the AIS from the 2.5L on it. Helix throttle body spacers are a bit over-rated, take a throttle body gasket and make or have a local machine shop make one for you out of aluminum 1 1/4" thick (smoothbore), bore it to 55mm. If you don't convert your intake to a K&N tube, at least pull the restrictors out of your stock air box. You'll find one at the exit end of the hard plastic top, just before it enters the flex tube to the throttle body. The other one is at the bottom front of the air box.

The next step I would take is a high lift cam (another emission test flunker).

Hope this helps & happy wheelin!

anyone else want to reply to this now? i'll do the intake and exhaust upgrade myself, i have decided on currie axles with 4.88 gears. does that sound about right with 34" tires? i'll worry about the drive train (motor+tranny) when it breaks. :x whats your favorite winch?, ;) i'm looking for something that mounts to a 2" receiver?

Warn makes a winch "harness" if you will that allows a lot of their winches to be mounted to a 2" receiver hitch. And you can always have the option of leaving the winch at home for daily driving.... just don't forget it when you wheel.

4.88's sound good.
