I have a 83 cj7 automatic,I6 258 w/bbd carter carb.I got the cj7 in a box for free .The engine was half apart when I got it ,I put in a new cam, lifters, push rods, and rockers. The head and valves checked out ok so I didn't do anything to them.
After putting it all toghther it ran rough so I got another carb.(79 carter bbd)..It runs good on the flatts or going down hill, but going up hill it will sputter and stall out.I have to turn around to get it started again(faceing down hill). It has a new fuel pump too.Any ideas???? Thanks

Check the float level. It may be too high. Going up hill allows for excess gas to "spill" over from the bowl and flood it out. I had the same problem on my 66'. I FINALLY fixed it by going to a Holley carb. No more problems

Good deal. I'm sure that we're not the only one's to run into this problem. Maybe someone out there can learn from our experience and avoid a head ache.

That answer from Big Buro was right on the money. One thing you might think about if you should find that a rebuild is in order is to use a marine rebuild kit. Makes all the difference. Happy trails,Todd

Hey Rockmup,
I want to hear more about that marine rebuild kit. I've never heard of it before. How would you go about finding a rebuild kit for say an old rochester 2 barrel? That just puzzles the hell out of me. I need to hear more on that one.

Hey Big Boro. I looked into it. They are kits for carbs on boats. That is all they are. I have a feeling that some of the parts will help keep the carb working while it is bouncing around a lot. That is what I gathered from looking around. It may be wrong but, hey what the heck.

O.K., I figured that it was a kit for a boat but how would you go about getting one? I've never seen a boat with the same carb as my jeep. Can you take virtually ANY kit and use the parts for a standard carb? That's hellasiously interesting. I'm gonna have to investigate that one. I might have just spent another $300.00 that I didn't have to.

Hey guys! Around here we have alot of jet boats that run the shallow rivers and we were at work one day and I mentioned that I ran my Q-jet instead of my carter on my Jeep because it was not as tempemental. One of the guys told me about the marine kit for a carter. Our NAPA store orderd it for me and it works real well.I can't seem to find the pn just yet(I'm moving) but I'm sure they could find it for you.No I don't know what else the have them for, sory. It was just a different float and springs that didn't let the fuel slosh around so much.Good luck btw It seems to me it came as a rebuild kit. Todd
