I love jeeps.

They are the only brand that I know of that has had a ford, amc, gm, dodge powertrain.
The simple fact that the cj's body as well as the cherokee has hardley changed it's apperance since there introduction's.

With the new commander and liberty I just hope the chrysler corp. Doesn't ever consider the end of the wrangler-cherokee lines.

in my opinion, hopefully I don't offend anyone, but chrysler is completely screwing up jeep, the newest G. cherokee's are not as good, there alot lower to the ground, the liberty's are not as good as the old XJ's and I just don't like the way they drive, the commander is rediculous, and next gen. wrangler is gonna stink! and now there gonna come out with the patriot?!?!? a FWD car!?!?!!? I realyze the old jeepsters were 2wd, but at least they were RWD and they were still tall, the patriot is a car, like the neon! does anyone else feel this way or is it just me?? I hate to say it but I think TJ was the last REAL jeep!

The Jeep started going downhil when AMC bought them out in 71. But even the Willys Jeeps used Buick V-6 engines with Dana running gear. I'm not sure who made the 4 cyl. I think they were Ford engines. There was even a diesel way back in the 60s. From 66 to 72 there was a Jeepster Commando, 4X4 and of course the old CJs.

I don't like the new models too much but what I really like is the 3.0 DC V6 diesel engine they offer for the European GCs and the Commander... that engine is damn powerful and provides lots of low end torque and great mpg...

yeah, the newer fuel efficient diesels are great. i've got a VW jetta tdi that i just love to drive, and i get 42 mpg with an automatic.

yeah, those vw/audi tdi engines are a blast, they have plenty of power and still score high when it comes to economy. over here we have 1,9 liter tdi's with 150 horse and 2 liter with 170 horse, they are like racecars and do some mid 40 mpg and better... and I still have a 4 liter XJ as a daily driver *lol* damn ;o) it's just that over here everybody drives a vw and I just don't want to drive what everybody drives... and have you ever tried to wheel a passat? ;o)

it's the reverse here, especially in california where they quit letting VW sell TDI's in 2002 (i bought mine used). you rarely see TDI's on the road, and they usually have out-of-state plates on them.

i dream about dropping a 1.9 (2.0 would be nicer though) TDI motor into a cj2a with a toyota 5 speed (i found an adapter through acme) and toyota t-case. i'm sure it should fit, those motors are TINY. I think it will be one of the funnest jeeps to drive ever, on the highway and trail. really stripped down and simple, focused on light weight, it should get GREAT gas mileage.

someday....

Oh I bet this would be great... but the tdi engines are pretty much about electronics with all the sensors, so not an easy fix on the trail in case, plus they do not do well with dirt, the air sensor starts making trouble when you drive on dirty road as my dad experiences once in a while... but still, it would be a neat thing to do for sure.

I think it was when Chrysler bought Jeep from AMC in '86 that the hardcore offroad repution was lost. The YJ fust wasn't a true Jeep. to much electrical and computer stuff that made many YJ's lemons, but they did have preety good suspension.

There are as many opinions out there as there are Jeeps, and I'm sure that you all have Awesome vehicles that you are very proud of, however, I myself prefer to keep things "all original". I have a '48 CJ2A that I am rebuilding, and plan to keep it exactly the way it was when it came off the assembly line, believing it to be sexy as hell just the way it is! I may not go as fast as you all, but I will go anywhere that you do. Long live Jeep!!

I am going for original with my CJ, the XJ I modified a bit but that's "just" my daily driver. The CJ is the keeper, I want to give it to my kids when I have any...
