I'm trying to find more information about converting a stock 85 CJ-7 with the 258/T176 to a TH700 automatic. I see the adapters I need. After reading Advanced Adapter's web site, it appears you need more than a few adapters. They mention offsetting the driveline 1". What is this swap really going to involve? Thanks!

I would think twice befor using the TH700 most of the later models were electronicaly controled. I would look at the T999 or the T727 as a better swap option. Your 258 is not going to tear up either of these tran. - They were both used behind V8s as well as the 258 and will bolt up a lot easier.
If you have to go GM the TH 350 or TH400 might be better.

Take a look at this link for a start in your hunt. http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/transmission02.html

I have a 83 cj7 with the t999 and it works just great. It should bolt right up with no messing with adapters. Good luck .....lets us all know how it works out... :)

Thanks. I've driven a friend's CJ with the T999. A guy at my work installed a 727 in his CJ. I know going with one of these automatics would be the easiest swap.

Let me give you guys some more information. I have a 4" lift, 33" tires, 4.10 gears with a detroit in the rear. I can't drive long distances on the highway and I don't even want to try at 2800-3k rpm. Having an overdrive trans would be great! As far as the TH700, I would buy the B&M 4wd trans from summit racing which is not electronically controlled and can handle 450 ft-lbs.

I can do any swap. I just want to make the right one. If anyone has done, or knows anybody that's done a GM auto transmission install, please let me know. I'd like to learn more.

Thanks!
