Hi, im 16/f/fl and i just recently got my drivers license. All my life (well actually only as long as i've been interested in cars and such) i've wanted a jeep wrangler. Just something about them...they look like a blast. I love mudding and offroading, and Im always begging my guys friends to let me tag along on their little weekend 4-wheelin adventures. So i figure, its probably about time for me to get a jeep of my very own! However, i know very little about the vehicle itself. I know that there are a few differnces b/w certain makes of the wrangler. I know that There is the CJ, then YJ, then in 96 they start making TJs and so on. I know a little about suspension and whatnot, but i know almost nothing about the engine or whatever else is lurking under the hood. Basically, all im asking is for some1 who can answer some of my questions.
1) Can you add a lift to leaf spring suspension?
2) Whats the deal with the doors? I see some jeeps with em, and some without em.
Ok so i got a lot more questions, i jsut cant remember any right now, lol. Thankyou for listening!

First off, Welcome aboard!

OK for the history of them... CJ, then in 87 the YJs were introduced afte Chrysler took over the Jeep Brand, and then there was 1996 the year of no Wranglers, Chrysler laid off production while they modified the wrangler platform to what you see in the 97 models and up. This is why you don't see a 96 Wrangler (I think they started releasing them again midyear but under the name of 97 TJ). As far as your questions... you can add a lift to leaf spring suspensions, most kits involve more arched springs, or you may hear the phrase SOA (spring over axle) swap, wherein you take the SUA (spring under axle) and place the spring pack onto of the axle. This is a quick lift which can easily achieve 3-4 inches. There are many other things you can do with the leaf spring suspension to get better flex/articulation. As far as doors go, you have a)full steel doors, b)half steel doors, c)half fabric doors d)custom designed doors (rail doors with netting and others), e) doors off. Most jeeps you will see in lots or for sale will probably have doors with them. People just take them off when they like the weather. I generally run doors off (until I take my hardtop off) on the good days and put them back on when it rains. They are fairly easy to remove (just remove the retainer nut from the top hinge and lift off) hence you see som many jeeps running doorless. Also check local laws before running without doors. I believe there are no state laws in FL about running without doors and I know Jacksonville/Duval county have no ordinances. But check with local officials (PD, HP, or DMV) to make sure your particular location is the same.

For more answers to your questions... there are some FAQ pages in the wrangler forum that might answer a few questions you have. We have a plethora of knowledge on here so if you do have a question feel free to ask. Someone is probably going to have an answer.

As far as further learning... I would reccomend picking up a copy of JP, fourwheeling, petersons four wheel and offroad or another magazine of the sort and just read through it. TRhere are hundreds if not thousands of things you can do with a Jeep and these magazines are great guides for those new to the Jeeping world.

Back to the topic at hand...

In CA it is legal to run without doors IF you have at least TWO rear view mirrors. IE: Interior and driver's side exterior or both exterior. The problem with Wranglers is the mirrors are attached to the doors. If you pull the doors you pull the mirrors (duh). There are a few aftermarket brackets out there that will relocate them. The coolest one I've seen is the one that drops into your top door hinge when the doors are off. Of course the absolute coolest thing to do would be to adapt a set of CJ7 bracks to the windshield ;)

As far as suspensions go... consider what you will be using the Jeep for. If it is going to be a daily driver you might want to consider a less agressive set-up. If you're going for more off road performance you might look into Terra-flex. They're making some pretty cool suspensions for leaf-springed Wranglers (Revolver shackles and Z-blocks).

Good luck on getting that Jeep (I wanted to get one since I was 12).

i think the midget scared her away......... ;)

welcome to the board, and do consider what your jeep will be used for...i bought my first jeep when i was 15 and my second when i was 17..i then sold my CJ5 to help finance the parts for my Cj7....if you are into a little more of the creature comforts it is a lot easier to find a wrangler in the shape u want.....
