Hi Gotmud3 and welcome to the forum!!!!!!!!!!
The first CJ2 I had I went kinda in the middle the engine and the drivetrain were stock but it was lifted with nice seats, Saganaw steering box and upgraded brakes That was fine BUT it was still a 40 mile an hour jeep, top speed.
As much as I like the flathead 4 cyl engine I would suggest a engine swap to a modern 4 cyl or even a V6 that way if you decide to change the gears you have the power to do that.
As far as body and drivetrain parts, get ahold of TJMAGOO on this forum she could probably hook you up with a 4 Wheel Drive Hardware Catalog they have one of the lagest selections of restoration parts and aftermarket parts and just about everything else you could want for your project.
Good luck with your Jeep and we want pics of the progress :D :D

Gotmud,
The first place I would start with would be a Chilton's type manual. They are cheap, somewhat useful starting points. If you have a lot of the original stuff, like the oil bath air filter, original engine, relatively unmolested dash board etc, I think it would be a shame to trash that history. Get yourself a good shop manual at that point and prepare to spend some time pouring through it to see what stock looks like. If you can, go to a Willys reunion (we are having one here in Washington, PA on July11, 12)
If your Jeep is not very original, I wholeheartedly agree with 5.0GPW, get a modern engine and tranny.
I have a '46 CJ2A that I am doing a frame off resto right now. I also have a DJ3a flatfender that I'm swapping in a GM 4.3L V6/Turbo 350/Dana300Xcase, modern axles etc.(Parts under tarps and in the basement until the '46 is done!)
Good Luck and Happy Jeepin
