My wife is thinking about getting a Jeep Liberty and I was curious on how they are holding up. Any major troubles? Major complaints? She is looking a several small SUV's and I like the idea of her getting a Jeep, but don't know anything about the Libby...thanks.

My parents have an '02, and they haven't had any problems with it. Of course, it doesn't see the road all that much...it's four years old and has 17,000 miles on it.

For what it is worth, I seen a Wrangler and a Liberty along the interstate the other day, they had gotten into it. I was surprised that the Wrangler had most of the front fenders and hood wiped out, but little damage to the Liberty. Must be tougher than they look!!!!

Had a 2002 KJ and traded it is with 72,000 miles...got a Liberty CRD (Diesel). Gas Mileage for the 3.7L Gassers is not very good at all. The CRD is getting MUCH better MPG's. I would not buy a gasser again after having the CRD. I am getting over 20mpg in town...stop and go...and...over the Estiamte for highway. I can get over 30 mpg Highway with cruise control set at 68 on flat or small rolling hills. I only have 3200 miles on mine and this diesel might take 10,000 miles to really break in. Driveability is also better.
Here is something I posted on the LOSTKJs forum:
That is a hard one to decide for someone...I traded in my 2002KJ but that is a different situation since it was older.
I will say that I like my CRD better than my 3.7L for more than a few reasons. Mileage these days is at a premium and I think it will be even more important in the very near future. I have consistently met the estimated City MPG Estimate and surpassed the Highway MPG Estimate. Driveability is better IMHO. The torque makes in city driving a pleasure in the CRD. Safety has been definitely upgraded with the Mercedes Influence (and the moustache). The ESP/Traction Control/Roll Over Mitigation/ABS Improvements have created a much better SUV in emergency situations ( maybe your 2005 already has that ). Alternative Fuel possibilities also factored into my decision with world politics as they are (not saying the "sky is falling" ) today. Bigger Fuel Tank of 20.5 gallons verses the 18.5 gallons of my 2002 3.7L. Sounds trivial but with the bigger fuel tank and better mileage, I can travel a long way before I need to fill up.
If noise is a concern, the CRD does make a little racket compared to the 3.7L. Even with the Common Rail and Extra Sound Deadening materials added, the noise of the CRD does factor in. With the Radio playing, I don't really notice this at all. Otherwise, everything is better as far as i am concerned with the CRD. Plus the CRDiesel Decal looks great...

I know of one fellow that's talking lemon law on his CRD libby due to it eating EGR's constantly. So far they've been replaced under warrantee, but at $200 each, it'd get ridiculous if you had to buy 'em.

The Libby my coworkers bought for their daughter has been doing well... only one issue came up and was handled under warranty.
I'm actually thinking about getting one myself.

mygirlfriend got a brand new one after i got a new wrangler. Its only got 6k on it but so far no issues. The ESP that they offer on the new ones is nice to have in the snow and ice.

Funny story, I was trading my 01 Grand Cherokee in, my salesperson asked me to at least look at the liberty renegade.. I thought "never".. it's a girl's suv..
Boy was I wrong.. he said "trust me, just humor me and drive it". Once I saw the light bar, the nice alloys, the rock rails, off road lamps up front.. I was hooked.. then i drove it.. omg.. this thing has a strong V6.. I'm very pleased with the gas mileage compared to my 4.7 V8 Grand Cherokee.
And it does attract alot of looks and stares.. I'd say go for it.. Feels nice on the road.. haven't had it off road yet, but I plan on it.
Here's my ride.. :

i'm getting about 22 to 23mpg highway...
Love not filling up as frequent as i did w/ the grand cherokee.
And the fact that my Renny looks way more rugged than a WJ.

bought a '04 liberty limited with all the goodies on it for the wife. we've put about 46,000 miles on it so far with no problems. other than the position of the window switches and waiting for the dealer to get off their butt to replace the ball joints, under warranty, i can't complain. it's been great on road trips, gets 23-25 mpg, and comfortable. she won't let me take it offroad yet but i keep hoping. that's what the CJ is for. i've never been a big chrysler fan but so far so good.

I upgraded to a Liberty at Enterprise on a recent trip, and boy was I ever glad I did! Freak snow and ice storms coupled with sub freezing weather... Jeep held up fine, and the traction control is very nice. I even tried "outsmarting" it but couldn't. I did all the stupid things, stomp on brakes, jerk steering wheel, floor it out of turns, etc. Liberty was unfazed. As a daily driver and mild weekend warrior, the only nicer ride I can think of is the XJ. (sniff sniff RIP).

I have owned two and I have sold about 300 KJs.
In the last 18 months I have had about ten customers who have been involved in major collisions.
All of them came back for another KJ... It seem they like walking away from a wreck. :7:
You know what they say "Any crash you can walk away from is a good one!"

That was a roll at 55mph. Everything was shot but the tranny/transfer and engine. I took all the good parts off of it and put them in storage.

my wife's 2005 kj has about 43,000 miles on it. about 17 mpg in town and 20-22 on the highway but i drive 85-90 on the highway with a rocket box on top. i do all the scheduled maintenance, use BG 44k every 9k miles, and use mobil one synthetic 5w-30. my wife loves it. she loves the back seat room, nice height, roomy, great for groceries, good to haul two dogs around. i guess it is ok. don't like it as much as my 2000 XJ but it does have more back seat room. looks like something your highschool sister would drive but i guess it is ok...cheaper than the grand cherokee...go with the diesel...

I have a friend from my old work who beat the crap out of hers. She says it didn't hold up well.
I have seen her drive. I think it might have held up pretty well.

Well, my 2003 has 54K miles, and needs the front differential pinion seal replaced...leaks like a sieve! No off-roading, and adult-driven. Very little 4X4 use, just in snow and ice.
Well, guess I'll get to see how much work it is to change - shouldn't be much.
Other than that, no problems, but I bought it used.

Shouldn't be very long before you'll need ball joints.
I was just on a ski trip this week with Willness33, and his wife called one day complaining that their Libby wouldn't come out of 4wd. As she pulled into the Jeep dealer, it finally popped out.

The diesel motor is great it's the junk that DCX put on it that has me worried.
But other that the EGR valve and the worries about the Tranny. I love my libby. I just hate the worries about the EGR.

Here you go, one better. We're on the 4th set at 112K miles. The third set was done only 6 months ago. The 4th set was put on last week. I'm just glad I'm not paying for it.

Bought my wife's Libby, an 05 and she has had no problems with it at all. She puts a lot of miles on as a home health nurse, and it did exceptional during this last winter here in Colorado. Only thing I would do different is get the diesel.

I have a 2006 Liberty CRD, even though I love it when it?s running good. It?s a POS, I get a CEL every 2 to 3 weeks, it?s on it 4th EGR valve 2 in the last 3000 miles. At the dealers now for Transmission issues, WOULD NOT recommend getting a Liberty CRD or any other Chrysler product at this point. Fuel mileage varies tank to tank from 17 to 23mpg, 23 mpg is the best it has ever gotten averages 20mpg, doing the same driving week to week.
I have over 25k on this vehicle and have never had a warm fuzzy feeling about it. And I always have that question in the back of my mind ?Am I going to make it back home this time?.
If we take our vacation back to PA this summer if It?s not traded in by then we will rent a vehicle because I just don?t trust the Liberty.

Moose Check out www.lostkjs.com and look under the CRD section at the ORM thread. If you unplug the airflow sensor on the intake after the filter then it will cut the EGR valve off. You will notice a good jump in takeoff power and increased MPG. :happydan: You will still get the CEL but at least you know what it is for. ( This is just for off-road operation only).
Also there is alot of good info on lostkjs.com for the CRD.

My sister's Liberty died.
She had all the recalls done, drove it across country and was smacked by some guy while backing out of the driveway.
15 MPH impact crumpled the frame and totalled her Liberty.
I told her to get a TJ.

Care to qualify your dumb-*** statement?
My old Celica had 185k miles on it when I sold it. It now has over 230k on it & still runs great. Never needed more then regular maintenance.
My dad's 93 T100 also still runs & drives like a new truck.

We miss our '90 4Runner. Traded it in for a minivan...needed more seats with kid #4. We got the bummer deal.
I took it to a local Toyota dealer for an alternator (my tools were packed for a move and they were the cheapest estimate in town!), they ran the VIN and found a NEW recall for the 1990 4Runner. They had 5 documented feild failures of the tie rod (on lifted trucks even!) and issued a recall on 15 year old trucks. Mine had 250k miles. Then we loaded it to the gills and drove it 2500 miles. Then took several thousand-mile trips to California.
I miss that truck.
Too bad the Liberty seems to be such a fragile (comparitively) chassis. It seems a good idea. I looked at them to buy one when we got the 4Runner. Saw a video of one grenading the transfer case on an easy hillclimb and decided:umno:
They seem ok for DD's tho. My sister loved hers until the wreck.

Well i was joking because it's a jeep forum...I guess no one here can take a joke.
But, I've never owned a toyota and most of the people I know that had them didn't like them. I know thats how it is with every car company, some people have no problems and love them, others have problems and don't like them.

Buy American
So, what exactly do you consider "Buying American"? Is it buying the Ford, Chevy or Dodge that's built in Mexico, but the profits (haven't been any of those for a while) go to a handful of Americans, but the jobs are all filled by non-Americans, or buying a Toyota, Honda, or Nissan that's built at a factory in the U.S. in which they are built by Americans, but the company is held outside of the U.S.???
Which helps more Americans???

i own two Jeeps, both made in toledo, ohio. by americans. i don't buy foreign brands no matter where they are made. and unless i don't have a choice i won't buy anything made anywhere else even if it costs a little more. i would rather buy something old made in America, and fix it (because you can), than buy some of the new junk made somewhere else and have to replace it every six months.

I try to buy American, but it's difficult to only buy American nowadays. I do not shop at Wal Mart, and although I'm no environmental saint, I make my decisions with a nod to the environment. I also try to use my blinkers, and I hold doors for old ladies. Now if I can just stop staring at boobs, I'd be set.
Drove my Rubicon from Denver to Cheesman Reservoir on backroads today, and it seemed like every other car on the dirt roads was a Liberty, stuffed to the gills w/families, fishing gear, floaties, and other river-related fun stuff. It's nice to see people actually using an SUV for what they were meant for. I mean, they weren't wheeling them, 4hi was more than enough for the conditions, but it was still nice to see some dirt on the tires.
