:x :USA: For some unknown reason my exhaust pipe, cat, and muffler are getting really hot, in excess of 160 degrees. I have had the carb rebuilt and both the cat and muffler replaced. And, the problem still exist. The carb shop, San DIego Carberator points the finger at La Mesa Muffler and guess who they blame. I am looking for options other trhan going to a jeep dealer for a diagonsis of the problem. Usefull ideas may be sent to mibs@cox.net
Are you running too lean?
What's the engine temp running?
Is 160 degrees excessive for the exhaust?

If the muffler isn't right for the engine it will have too much back pressure,or restriction and over heat the cat..
The cat. gets really hot anyway thats how it works, turns the gasses into water vapor .( A catalyltic reaction produces heat.) Hense the name catalytic converter.
Is 160deg. too hot ?I dont know for sure.

How do you know the temperature of the catalitic converter? Are you shooting it with an infared temperature laser probe? I'll say this, the hotter you get the catalitic converter, within reason, the better it's gona work. It is designed to burn excessive gas fumes from the engine by means of a catalytic metal by heat. That's the deal. What your engine doesn't burn, the cat gets. Gaseline engines are very inefficient, around 25 to 35% efficient at best. The rest goes out the tailpipe, except for the cat getting it. I don't have a cat on my '85 anymore and my floor pan gets noticebly hot just due to the exhaust pipe position.
If you're running a cat and live in a state that does inspections, go by a state instection station and see what their auto exhaust inspection equipment says. If that 's ok, ignore the heat and drive on.
