Ok ok, before you all start hammering me and saying things like :10: , please listen... You can see from my sig that I had a 2wd XJ, and it was a great daily driver vehicle.
I'm thinking of getting a 2wd JK and keeping my 2004 TJ Rubicon and using the JK as a DD. Currently, I've got a 2006 Saab (w/all wheel drive) as my DD, and realized I could've gotten by with only 2wd. Denver doesn't really have that bad of winters (this past one was an exception) and on days where I really need 4wd, I can always drive my TJ. Just thought it'd be fun to have a JK as a DD, and just keep it 2wd to keep fuel and maintenance costs low. For "looks" I'd probably put black steelies on it to match my TJ and maybe some street tires like the BFG AT's instead of MT's. For those that have the JK, is it liveable as a DD? I'm spoiled by my Saab, and am a sucker for comfort now. I still love my TJ though!
Cheers.

Will 15's fit on the new JK's, or are there brake clearance issues? I downgraded to 15's from 16's on my TJ. Just want to make sure if I do this, I'll be able to fit 15's on it so I can stay w/the flotation sizes.

Seriously, why would you get a 2wd JK? I would get the 4wd, especially in Denver. Plus the resale value on a 2wd Jeep is horrible. As soon as you take that off the lot it's probably only worth 1/2 of what a 4WD JK would be.
Yes some 15's will fit, depending on the thickness of the material used to make the rims, I have heard some 15's will fit, so touch the calipers. Its tight regardless.

I just can't justify owning 2 4wd Jeep vehicles. 2wd JK would be my DD and 4wd TJ would be for wheelin' and snow. a 2wd would be cheaper initially and cheaper to run for the long haul, not too concerned about resale, since I'd probably put a bunch of miles on it and end up donating it a dozen years down the road.

My wife wants a 2wd 4 door and I think it would be great.
If you don't need 4wd all the time on a DD, why buy the extra hardware just to wear it out and carry the extra weight around?
What is the mileage difference? I would think that to be a factor above the sticker price.
Resale is a good factor to consider, but it also depends on how long you plan to keep the rig. I really don't look at resale as I buy a rig and run it for years until it has no value anyway (can't afford a new rig every two years).
Even in northwest Montana, I drove in 2wd almost all the time, with exceptions during storms until the city plowed. Even then, I just locked the hubs and still rarely actually used the front axle.

In answer to your question about a JK as a DD, I bought one (4 dr) for my wife and she loves it. No soft top wind noise (we only got the soft top), plenty of power, and a killer factory sound system. Plus, it seats five!

When I was in South Florida last fall, I stopped at a Jeep Dealership and 70% of the Jeep JKs on the lot were 2wd. They said most of the people buy them to commute and the top down feel but if you don't need 4wd, why buy it. You have a 4x4 when the weather turns, I see your point totally. Save the money for some mods.

Well, it's a no go folks. Not anytime soon anyway. I played with the #'s a little bit, and for anything to be reasonable, I'd have to let the Saab go and lose a big chunk of my "safety net" for a big down payment. As of right now, I'm better off keeping the Saab as a DD and just concentrating on paying off my Rubicon, which will hopefully happen before the year is over. Once that's paid off, I may entertain a JK as a DD. Oh well, it would've been fun! I need to make more $$$!

I have a family of five - no go in the CJ7. We all fit in the JK AND I plan on wheeling it on some less agressive stuff (like the Mojave Trail). I bought a 2wd Tundra and too many times missed 4wd. That's why we went with the 4wd. Just remember, you'll be chaining up in the winter (if it snows where you are) - a sad sight on a Jeep.
We could have got the nav and satellite radio system with a six speed/2wd but opted for the auto/4wd with the premium sound system at the same price.
Don't worry, we won't give you too hard of a time about the 2wd - LOL!!!

Thanks Tower! Yeah, obviously, I would only consider a 2wd JK as my DD only because I have a 2004 TJ Rubicon at home for weekend fun!
I'll have to wait a little to entertain this dream though, the $$$ just isn't there right now.
Thanks for all the input guys. Appreciate it.

Jeepis,
qcom here, same as the other forum, I say you should do what makes you happy. Don't know what the resale is on your Saab right now, but if you traded it in on a 2wd bone stock, you wouldn't be that much different in payments, you would just be doing them longer.

Oh hey qcom!
Yeah, I know, but I think I'll just keep the Saab a little while longer. I'm thinking of just paying it off, actually. Wow, 1 post, you must be a new member! Well, welcome to the Jeep Forum!

Eh, I've been watching since march, but never posted apparently. I thought that I had posted at least once before.

This forum's pretty informative, and stays Jeep focused, unlike the other forum, where certain members just like to be complete assholes. The technical/mechanical value of the other forum has dropped sharply in value. I still browse it though, I figure if I own a saab, I better keep an eye on the saab forum.

Absolutely. I still like some of the stuff on the Saab forum, but I figure I won't get involved in anymore of the political/religious threads anymore to avoid petty bickering. I have noticed that I spend less and less time there, so eventually I won't be on there anymore at this rate.
Anytime a TJ owner moves up to a a JK (or in your case, owns both) is still a win in my book, so I'll be out there rooting for you. If you want some specific JK stuff, there is the jk-forum.com out there that reminds me of the early days of saab92x.com in that everyone there is learning about the vehicle at the same time. I post there a lot more.
Edit: ouch, I'm a mall crawler now? Damn.

I just looked up the new MPG ratings for the 4wd vs the 2wd w/ manual trans.: 4wd = 15 city, 18 highway & 2wd is 16 city, 21 highway according to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/. So, no great savings with fuel economy.
Then, there's only a $2,000 difference in new sticker price between the 2wd & the 4wd, however, resale on the 2wd's is horrible.
I think you'd be far better off in a car that gets closer to 30mpg for a DD, than a 2wd Jeep.

Yes, but you haven't factored in the love I have for the Jeep brand! But no, I have decided to stick with my Saab for my daily driver. It's an ok car, w/nice features like heated seats.

Well Dr. McNinja/qcom, we'll just have to keep in touch via this forum then!

PS: I was a mall crawler once too, don't worry, you'll get there someday!
