I'm considering buying my friend's early 90's Grand Cherokee, but would
like to know if they make freewheeling hubs, or any other products that
would enable me to tow the GC behind a motorhome without disconnecting
driveshafts, or doing any damage to transfer case and/or transmission.
All advice is greatly appreciated, Thanks!!
Tom
Mine you just put the tranny and transfer case in nuetral. I have never done it but it says it in the manual.

Man I wouldn't flat tow it. I would get a car dolly and pull it that way. Much easier on the vehicle.

i'm not that familiar with the grand, but like lost one says, you may break something. if the tcase get's starved for fluid you'll toast it. if the grand completely unlocks the front hubs in 2wd, you could just tow it with the rear wheels on a dolly, since a dolly is lighter than a trailer.

I don't know how it works with the newer vehicles but when you are flat towing a CJ you are supposed to leave the front hubs locked so the gear movement gets the grease flowing in the axle and you don't burn up parts.

you have to flat tow a quadra trac ( as in full time four wheel drive ) however select trac or comand trac you can dolly, as long as the trans is in park ( or gear for manual ) and the tcase in neutral . from what ive heard, one of the advantages of jeep transfercase's is they self lubricate while being towed, so theres no need to remove any shafts.

Lets get down to basics. First find out what transfer is in it. Secondly read
the owners manual. I normally dont surf the GC net. I am an XJ owner.
With 242 fulk time Transfer/ Select Trac. The owners manual for the XJ with 242 transfer.
1.Place Transmission in neutral.
2.Place transfer in neutral
NOTE: The full time light will stay on
3.Shift transmission into drive and make sure there is no vehicle movement
4.Turn ignition key to the unlock OFF position
5.Shift transmission into PARK.
It is prepared for towing.
Extract from 1990 XJ Owners Manual
Warning!! The steering must be in the unlocked position or the towed vehicle cant steer

I hope you meant ZJ which came out in 1993. The GC before that was an SJ

All four-wheel drive jeeps with a transfer case that has a neutral position can be flat towed. The instruction in my owner manual says to leave the transmission in park and shift the transfer case into neutral.

When I flat towed by CJ7 1978 i had the lockers free, transmission in neutral, and transfer case in neutral. went about 250 miles with no problems.
Now that I've got a tow dolly (2 wheel kind), I am curious if it makes any difference in the set up?
I've got an older setup with 16 inch wheels and it rides a little high. Any suggestions on how low I can cut my dolly down to tow?
Thoughts and comments are welcome.
Thanks.

Ok dude here's the scoop. If its a Zj with full-time NP249 it has to be towed with wheels on the ground. With the tcase in neutral and I'd put tranny in neutral too!!! You'll also need the convertor to use the turns and brake lights.
NP242 or NP231---- tow dollys are ok!!
But on all the ZJ Tcases, make sure that you have a fullsize spare before going even 5 miles down the road. If you have a flat and use the donut.. YOU WILL BURN SOMETHING UP!!!! front axle or Tcase... This is straight from the horses mouth. I used to work for Jeep/Chrysler and have seen so many burned up diffs., because of this. Matter of fact Chrysler did a recall on the 96-98 Zjs to replace the donut w/full-size. Hope this helps. Good luck John

Sorry guys, I posted my CJ7 comment on this forum. I hope I did not confuse anyone. I did a search on 4wd and this thread was right on point.
Sounds like we all like towing our jeeps.
Good luck to everyone and thanks for your responses to my questions already.
Let's go jeepin....!
