I was at work the other day and the boss killed his truck battery right. So he finds me and needs my help. I get out pull up to him and DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo son of a )*#&%@(*#$(*&^% I forgot I took out my bag of cables and back up stuff that I keep in my jeep most of the time. SO I got home tosed it back in. That got me to thinking about getting ready for my next trip. And what I take with me.

Now in the XJ's we have room under the seat in the back to put all kinds of tools and extra stuff. So I keep alot of things there. The rest all goes in the back in my recovery bag.

Ok to my point what all do you have in your recovery bag?

Jumper cables, TOOLS, shop manual, tarps, flares, straps, spare fluids (oil and coolant mostly), 25' air hose, zip ties, duct tape, JB Weld, assorted wiring and fuses, energy bars, water, blitz can, blankets, visual signal panel, strobe light, first aid bag, flashlight, assorted spare parts.... all the regular stuff necessary to survive a comet striking the Earth..... all stuffed into a tuffy drawer.

8) I second deadpedal. Two things I do-Check everything nuts, bolts, hoses etc. days befor I go. Second is if there is something on my jeep that could break that is specific to it,in my case its the heim joints for my front end,I make sure I have it with me. Not a whole lot of stuff.

Yeah, you know, a flashing light to draw attention... in case of an emergency. I've used it before to show my location, when I've broken down and my buddy went and got me a new fan and fan clutch that I broke. I also keep it when there are fire bans and you can't use road flares.

:D A little off the subject but deadpedal and his fan clutch problem reminds me of a fix I need to share. Take yor fan & clutch off. Find a spot you can drill 1/4" hole through both fan and clutch. Get a G-5 bolt long enough to hold them together and throw it in the tool box.Next time your clutch takes a dump just bolt the two together and there you go. No more over heating.I read this fix somewhere once. Works great.

If you do it befor you hit the trail its awsome. If not youmight not have the right bolt. I've used this once myself and had three other people on the trail use it.No problem

I just need to find a way to make microwave popcorn on the trail now. I don't think the manifold would work for that one though.

Yes they do in diff flavors I belive

You know I hadn't thought of that, I remember that from back in the day when we didn't have microwaves. You're talking about that pop-in-its-own pan stuff right?

You know I bet you could make quite a few new friends around the fire if you brought that camping...

Diff flavors. I know about the butter, salt and plain do they have other ones.

Tride it on an open fire not good but if you have a habatchie (SP)???
do it on low and keep it moving just like the stove and it works great.

You know, I made a tray that slips over the headers and is held in place by the valve cover bolts. We use it for warming sandwich's on cold days but bet I could pop some jiffy pop on it. It'll warm a sandwich in a matter of seconds so it should work. I'll try it and let you all know.

BTW, I take as little as possible when heading out to the bush. Tools, wire, rope, shovel, gears for the tranny and t-case, drive shaft u-bolts and nuts, tie rod ends, gear oil and engine fluids. That's it. All of it fits in the utility compartment under the passenger seat so it doesn't take up any room. Once I finish re-working my jeep this winter, I hope to make the list shorter. Tools, tie rod ends, fluids, and a can of fix a flat. Then, I'll know that my ride is sound.

I wish that my rig ran that well, I have a friggin' craftman tool chest that just LOOKS like it's an XJ... Well, impatience never helped anything.

By the way, are you talking about your '66? I love a well maintained flattie...

Big Buro
01-08-2003, 11:21 PM
The 66 is all I have to talk about anymore. It's not a flattie though, it's a CJ5. 90 degree windshield, vacuum operated wipers, vacuum assist brakes, bouncing speedo, 81 inch wheel base, 54 inches wide, etc....
It is pretty well maintained since very waking moment is spent either working on it or planning to work on it, or talking about work that needs to be done on it.

If we end up having this meet and greet, I'm planning on driving it out so I need to get it ready for that long haul. I'm gonna to make a T-shirt that says "f-ck you, I drove here" Think that would go over well?

deadpedal

I don't believe in trailer queens either. I was wondering if you had a CJ5 AND a flattie or just the CJ...

If you DID have a flatfender though, you'd donate it me.... wouldn't you?

Hey, I've read Big Buro's other posts, that was pretty original for him... As for me, I would love to get one of those shirts if someone printed them. You could always tone it down, but it kinda loses its' effect, doesn't it?

ya but if your not a jeeper your not going to get that and it's not going to be that funny. Like bikers that have that shirt that says if you can read this the B!t$h fell off. even if he isn't on his bike you still get what the shirt is saying.

Maybe if he has a pick of a jeep with another guy with a trailor with a old ford bronco or blazer on it? something like.

You know, back on subject... The most important thing that I take on rides with me is a partner and even more importantly, his truck.

I like hiking, but that's different from walking.

talk abouts you have to get a set of talkabouts they rock.

Big Buro

Actually, I was joking about the shirt. I may just tow my jeep there if I can't get anyone to ride with me. For that long of a trip, I'd rather caravan with other jeeps just for the safety of it. I'd hate to brake down half way there and not be able to make it on time. Then, even worse, be stuck. Now that sucks.

I went out and got a set of the family band Radio Shack sets, they work with the Motorola sets too. My wife and I used them on our move up here, so we can talk and keep each other awake on the road. They cost about $40 each and they're every bit as good as the Motorolas.

If I can come up with the funds to go when ever we plan for this to take place, and you plan to come thru CO. via I-70 you could meet up with me and we could caravan out.

since the last gas station is 20 miles from the beach i go to, and i drive 20+ miles down the beach, i always take at least 5 gallons of gas, its also useful for campfires. i tdake my high-lift, shovel, ax to chop drift wood, a mr. potatoe head for my ash pad, plenty of rope or strap, and i never go alone. i like to have at least one more good rig out there. then goes my tacklebox, poles, and an ice chest full of beer and water, bc dehydration is not nice. I also take other standard "going camping" type materials.
two quarts of oil, antifreeze, and basic tools.

My list changes depending how far I'm going. If we are doing some light wheeling local I'll just take a couple straps and misc. recovery gear. If we are going to Paragon or somewhere like that I take a Jeep load of stuff. Usually the list goes something like this. Recovery gear: straps, hooks, d-rings etc. Fluids: motor oil, diff lube, brake fluid, grease gun, a gallon of water, adult beverages for at night. Tools: everything I think I'll need and then some, tire repair kit. Parts: pins for swaybar disco's ( I always lose them), spare rear axle shafts (D35), u-joints, lug nuts, my collection of nuts and bolts. And finally misc camping gear and all that sort of stuff. Those small radios you guys are talking about are nice. I have a set made by kenwood. Most of the guys I run with all have CB's though so my radios usually stay home.

I like the curve this just took. I take the high lift, shovel, fluids, straps, roap, zip ties, flashlights, jerry can one time a guy at a gas station actually said wow you mean people really put gas in these thing, and other odds & ends. I also enjoy taking my 38 or 22 but I really like to take my bow. I made a rack that I zip tie to some little things on the back floor (probably mounts for the original back seat) it will hold three bows. Q. Does anyone know of any sites or manufactures of gun/bow racks for old CJ's. I have seen some rifle holders in magazines that have a spring loaded thing that holds the gun uprite like in a cop car, these were for old military vehickles and would probably mean drilling into the dash.[/b]

Thats just CO. law. now if I was a rancher or owned my own land or go to the range than I can shoot it all day long.
