Bought a mile marker 9500 at Jeepfest and finally got around to installing it a few weeks back and only ran the line out about 10 feet just playing around. Well this weekend I needed to drag a few trees around (fu..in loggers stole trees from my new house/property :irked: ) so I had to block the log road. Pulled the cable out for the very first time and about 50 feet in the cable is frayed. Mile marker lost any repeat business with me. :fosho: The only good thing about this is I have to get a synthetic line earlier than expected.

Have you contacted Mile Marker? They may replace it for free. Not sure of the details, but it won't hurt to contact them and see.

Yeah i would think they would replace it for free? There has to be some sort of warranty that if you buy a winch from them and the line comes out frayed that you should at least get new line?

Did you buy it from us? I would call customer service and see if they can help you.

Something isn't right here. I'm sure that thy would make it right. Is it a re-build?

Yeah I got it from 4WD. My opinion the whole winch is gonna be a boat anchor soon. The clutch free spool never worked. It only free spools if I leave the leaver in between engaged and disengaged. And when I was using it this weekend when I pulled the remote back out the plastic piece(of ****) it broke in half. Now I have to hold the remote line in the winch or it will just fall back out. I guess thats what I get for not saving up and buying a Warn. What sucks the most is everyone said this winch is WAY better than the smittybuilt I could have bought for 200 less. :dunno: I am in no way mad at 4WD thats why I have not called. Plus its a royal pain in the *** to get this thing back off.

If you have a problem with something, you really should call and have them fix the problem for you.

I agree. You spent your hard earned money on it, you should at least be satisfied with the product. Sure it'll take some time and work to get it off and a new one on, but it's a sacrifice I would make to get a product that works as it should. Good luck with it.

Interesting. 4 years and a godzillion pulls from my milemarker 9k and it's still ticking along fine. I burnt out the motor from over-use but that's expected on any winch :)
4wd will make it right, give em a call.

If it turned out to be a lemon, I'd seek a full refund, then you you can get what you want.

ive had the same luck with mine. ive had it get hot a few times and cut off, but that was my own fault for not being more patient. if its been acting screwy the whole time why did you wait so long for the problem to get worse before you tried to do something about it?

Magnets. Once the magnets start to go, there's not much u can do but use it till it dies. Mine would start sounding horrible (magnets cracking and breaking) and then i keep on winching until i'm done. It never failed while i was winching, but when i attempted another pull, it wouldn't start at all. I never overheated it though. When you pull about 13-15 times just to get about 200 feet, and do that a couple times a month, it'll wear out the winch in no time. Motors were $110 shipped from milemarker so it wasn't too bad. Nothing else on the winch broke though.

You can see how the magnet slid over at 1:00 It's also cracked inside and in pieces. That's the first motor i blew. The second was worse.

So, did you ever get the problem fixed? Also, what's your opinion of their customer service? I'm going on two weeks getting a part returned and replaced, no problems with them replacing it, they're just really slow.

I didn't have a good experience with MM. Mine was still under warranty and i called em up and asked them to take care of this and they said they would send a new motor to me. A couple weeks later i get the motor but it's for a different 9k MM (according to them) and is too tall to mount. I called em again and explained the situation. They told me to email them pictures of it so i did and they ended up sending another motor......the wrong one again. This one was too short and the drum was angled. Again i had to email them and they would send a 3rd motor but i got tired of waiting so i made the smaller motor work by stacking washers under it. It worked just fine too. I gave them the model and serial numbers on my winch and i dont know why they couldn't match me up with the right motor. At least i got it working.

I have a 9K milemarker and I had the same problem. I called milemarker and they sent me a new and i got it in about 3 days. I went synthetic though, much better.

my champion winch doesnt use solid state magnets, it uses cast iron plates wraped in copper coils (Electromagnets) these are way better setup for heavier duty loads. tow trucks use electromagnets in the motors on their winches (mostly warns and anouther brand i forgot their name) take heat alot better as well.

Couple of thoughts:
1. You should always give the vendor then the manufacturer the opportunity to address the problem before you flame them on the internet. It doesnt do you or them any good to just start flamming when you havent made contact. Nearly everyone in the four wheel drive industry will do their best to make you happy but, they dont know they have a problem unless you tell them. Then if you cant get resolution, voice it to the community, but still be objective and truthful.
2. The 2 motor types in the industry are permanent magnet and series wound coil (electro-magnet).
3. A Warn or Superwinch will do 200 ft pulls all day long and never flinch, we've proved it several times. We winched our way around Hells revenge and the winches that survived were the Warn, Superwinch and the Harbor Freight. The Harbor Freight had line speed measured in feet per hour but it still made it.
4. Permanent magnet winches draw less amperage, run cooler but in order to get the pulling power, they are geared really low which equals slow. Series wound coils draw a butload of amps, run really hot, but can get an equal pull with less gear ratio. The drawback to series wounds is that they can heat saturate and self destruct on repeated pulls: the windings in the coils melt together.
