Sorry about being the 3rd person to post about "getting a grand cherokee," but I am looking at WJ's. I just sold my lifted XJ, and more than anything i was wondering about which engine to go with? 4.7, or 4.0?? I know how great of an engine the 4 liter is, but i was wondering if it is worth the gas... and the extra $ spent on the 8. Not sure if I am gonna lift it yet, i got 2 years left of school and need something to make it the rest of the way, but if anyone has an idea for a budget boost thatd be great! thanks in advance

I've liked the WJ styling since it first came out. I want something that has a smooth ride, and still has some off-road capability. I loved my cherokee, but after putting my lift on it was not fun to drive long distances, or in some city traffic, which is mainly what I deal with. I have just found the WJ that I think I am going to go after, it is a 2000, but its got 83,000 on it. Perfect shape though. It's a limited so it has that full-time all wheel drive crap... If anything worries me, its that system. I have not read anything bad about it, but lets face it, it cannot be nearly as simple as my old np231 setup was to work on. The other thing is that it has the 4 liter which I like a lot, it is a trusted engine, especially by me (one with 165,000; and the other with 190,000) so I am happy with that. Any comments please feel free to leave them I always appreciate them.
well if i must
i have a zj and it has the 5.2 liter and i would't have it any other way. its putting out around 230 hp and thats still not enough. it has 210,000 miles and is still running strong.if it had any less it would barley move.
all though when ever i fill it up it emptys my pocket. but thats true with every jeep.
Just
Empty
Every
Pocket

I drove an 00 WJ 4.0 for 80k miles. You want the V8, beleive me. The 6 in a WJ not enough motor. I only got around 16 mpg, whereas my grandpa's WJ w/ the 4.7 got 18 (granted different driving styles). Also, the 42re tranny will not last more than 120k miles at the most. The heavy duty transmission in the V8 models is much more reliable. That being said, I have a 2.5" BB for sale for a WJ.
