:cry: i don't know what else to do. i have an 84 cj7 258/chy904auto, dana300, amc20rear, dana30front, dual outlet header exhaust, electronic ign. i recently replaced all of the gaskets(except the head gasket). it was next on my list. well it started leaking water into the oil. i took off the head and took it to a machine shop to get checked out. well they magnafluxed it and found no cracks, but the valves were sticking. so i had them do a valve job and mill it. it was warped a little. well when i got it back i replaced all of the gaskets again and torqued the head to the specifications of 85ft/lbs. i also cleaned the block out. i changed the oil 2 times after letting it run at operating temp for 10 mins. each thime. there was a bunch of sludge in it. i made sure that i cleaned the surface of the block good. i tried to be very clean with all of this. after i put it all back together started it up and it ran fine. i got up the next morning and checked the oil then drove to work. the oil pressure was fine. after i got to work i let it sit for 2 hours then checked the oil, it was "chocalate milk". i also opened the oil filler cap and the same. there was water leaking down the block from the head. i drove it home then removed the valve cover and retorqued the head to 120ft/lbs. i then put the cover back on, changed the oil/filter and ran it at operating temp for 10 mins. there was no problems noted at this time. then after checking the oil i drove it to work the next morning, same results. what did i do wrong? what else can i try to do?[/i]

Hi Kevin, On a 258 the cooling system runs through the intake manifold.Maybe you have a small leak in that?I would try bypassing it by connecting the 2 hoses together and run it for the same amount of time as you did to get to work, then check it again. The only other thing I can think of is a cracked BLOCK. Good luck and let us know

I had the same problem with a Honda Accord engine. Did exactly the same thing with the machine shop and gaskets and such. I never did get it resolved. My guess was that the head was bad, even after the shaving and pressure checks. The Honda head was aluminum, however, where the 258 head is cast iron.

Several suggestions.
1. You need to first find out where the water is getting into the oil.
First-
If the water is entering one of the cylinders from the head gasket, then the engine would act like one cylinder was misfiring and the spark plug for that cylinder would look different than the others. The misfire would be most notable at idle. You will also notice a lot of water vapor, much more than normal, they all exhaust some water vapor, coming from the exhaust pipe. This is a sure sign.
Second-
The head gasket could also leak water directly into the oil return passages that return the oil pumped up to the head components. This would not show up as a rough idling engine or any thing else, except for chocolate milk oil.

My guess is that if the head was already warped, shaving of the head may not prevent further warpage when the engine heats up. Warpage most likely occured due to extreme overheating of the engine. The 258 is know to be able to take a lot of heat associated abuse, but there is a limit. I once ran a 258 without water in it for 3 miles after a lower radiator hose bursted. Didn't phase the 258. Got so hot that oil was smoking off the engine. Replaced the hose and nothing came of it.

The other thing is that the block deck can warp as well. This is not likely though, but it has been know to happen. A machinest level and feeler gauges can check this. Also, put the head on the block with out a head gasket and see if theree is any rock of the head on the block. Put a powerful light on one side of the junction and look from the other side to see if you can see light though the junction. Hopefully not, else there could be a problem.

I would remove the head again being very careful to not spill oil or antifreeze all over the gasket. Look very closely for some sign on the gasket for a leak between the water passages to either the oil return passages or cylinder.

One other thing. If the head was shaved, then that means than the head bolts will travel futher into the block when tightened. Chase the bolts and threads in the block to remove stuff from them. Make sure there is no oil or junk in the bolt holes. All of this could result in an improper torque on the bolts. Might want to try new head bolts as well. If the others were subject to extreme heat, then the tensil strength and stretch on the bolts could have changed.
