anyone have experience with the diesels? i am really thinking about getting one, but have heard some bad things in regards to tranny problems and weird sensor issues. on the other hand i've read where you can get some serious power out of them without killing the mileage.

Modern diesels are just as reliable as a gas engine. Having said that, some manufacturers have had issues with parts like transmisisons and computers. I have a Cummins in a Dodge w/ a 6spd manual. Pulls like a tractor cruises like a car. I get about 19 MPG cruisen around and about 12-15 towing my Jeeps depending on how big of hurry Im in. The only issue I've had to date is the A/C, but thats a problem nearly all Dodge owners have had. Check Turbo Diesel Register for Dodge related stuff, like whose had what problems and how they got em fixed.

The VM diesel in the KJs aren't too bad but tend to show several problems over time. So they don't want their oil inside, they rather leave it in the driveway. Also the turbocharger wear pretty quickly when operated with the wrong oil or used with full throttle when cold. But in general in the newer versions hold much better than the old VM diesel in the XJ.
I am holding my fingers crossed that the newest version (in the KK and JK) will hold since that's what I am getting myself, a 2,8 VM diesel in the JK.

didn't know this was the same company that made the old XJ diesel. i can handle some oil leakage, turbos going out is another story.

Yup, it's the same company. DC bought them a while ago, so the connection stayed in place for the newer models as well.
At least the newer engines are no longer derived from the same industrial engine.

Take it from someone that had one. The motor itself is not to bad BUT the crap that DC put around it sucks. Plus They (Jeep) don't know how to work on them.
I am talking about the KJ not the GC.

thanks JM, that's why i've passed on it. read about 50% good and bad. the bad was very bad. very expensive and, like you said, jeep doesn't know how to fix their own crap. so i'll keep my XJ for now and work on it. probably be less headaches in the long run to stuff a diesel into it!!

Well, over here the stealerships at least know how to work on their sh**, so as long as you're in warranty everything is fine.

We have a crd liberty and we love it. We bought it used so the recalls and updates were already completed when we bought it. As far as reliablity goes it is the same as any engine and it has to be maintained correctly. With that said in the summer on the highway it is the only SUV that I have seen that can pull 28mpg+. The best I have gotten with it is 32mpg.
