Hello 4WD,

As some of you know I have been running these tires since I put the lift on my heep. I ran them in the size of 31X10.50X15. So here is the skinny on them. Off road I am sure my experience was not a good test of their performance but they did O.K. The only time I really got stuck was when I followed Rstarch and friends into a trail my bone stock, no locker having drive train had no business being on. And there was the time the heep sucked up peat bog water into the intake. But it was not the tires fault, the engine quit working from being flooded with water from natures sewage treatment plant. In snow they performed very well, on dry pavement they also performed to my satisfaction, and on wet pavement not so good. Had I not been driving it as a DD with the little ones in tow, I would probably not even mention the lack of footing on wet pavement. But they did want to slide around a bit in the rain. Being my first and probably only set of mud terrain tires I will purchase, I can not make a fair judgment on the road noise. The drivers’ front shock crapped out on me, and wore high and low spots all the way around the tires. At the end the road noise was so loud I could not turn my stereo up loud enough to here it with the windows down. Before that they were loud to me, but I am comparing them to Ht and AT tires I had on the heep before. I am impressed with the miles they ran though. I did loose a front shock about four months ago, and it wrecked the two drivers’ side tires. The good tires probably had 10k left on them, but they did have 45K on the clock. So I am very pleased with them and would recommend them to everyone here.

Now when I tell you what I replaced them with most of you will scratch your head. When I bought these tires they were around $140 something a tire. This is before all of the fees and taxes Illinois tags onto the price mind you. When I went to buy tire this time I wanted to down grade the aggressiveness of the tread a tad and get back to something more street friendly. I checked on the price of the Cooper Discoverer S/T. The 31X10.50X15 was $152 a tire, and the 30X9.50X15 were $148 a piece. Again this is before the raping of the taxes and fees is applied. This price seemed high to me, so I checked on the price of the STTs and they were $157 per tire. I told the guy at Farm&Fleet he needed to put down the crack pipe and check the prices again and walked out. After checking out two other Cooper dealers I found that Cooper is the one that needed to put down the crack pipe. After much deliberation I decided that the BFG AT/KO in the size of 30X9.50X15 was the tire for me. After fighting with COSCO over the size tire I could put on my modified suspension they did not get my business. That is another story which I will post later. I wound up at Discount Tire Co. near my house and got the BFGs for $138. I also got a $70 dollar rebate from BFG that COSCO was not offering.

I know what you are thinking. "How could you get SMALLER tires and put them on your jeep!?" Easy my mileage jumped up 3 MPG the second I drove out of the garage after the tires were installed. The heep has been off road five (5) times since I put the lift on almost four years ago. Only once was I in anything worse than bunny trails and Mr. Rstarch on this forum can attest to how many times he had to help my bone stock drive train out of a stuck. It was way too many IMO. As for the ATs over MTs it is great to be able to hear my radio again. And did you guys know that when going down the road at 60 MPH with the windows rolled down there is the sound of wind rushing by the window?

My $.02

I put the Cooper STT's on my YJ after having the ST's for a little over 70,000 :drop:miles. That is an amazing amount of mileage for a tire with such an aggressive tread pattern. If you spend less money on a set of comparable tires, but only get 50,000 miles of wear, you really aren't saving as much as you think.
When I wore out the ST's, I wanted to go with more of a mud tire, but I did not want to buy a tire that was going to wear out in 10,000 or 20,000 miles, like I have seen a few of my friends do. :loser: Yeah, they paid $65.00 less a tire than I did, but when I get two or three times the mileage, we will see who spent more money per mile.
:thk:As for wet traction: any tire that is formulated to last a long time (harder compound) is going to lose a little footing in the rain. Once again you are paying for the mileage. The tire manufacturer is just betting on the fact that anyone who buys a tire for its long life has enough sense to slow down in the rain.
I haven't had any problems with the STT'S and road noise, even with the top off. I can hear them... but just barely. Maybe the worn out shocks caused some of the increased road noise in your case?
So I am definitely going to agree with your recommendation on the STT's. Just my $.04

If I knew how much longer I am going to have this jeep, I would have spent the extra money again. The thing is I am working on a new vehicle this year and the heep might be the trade. But with my luck I will keep the thing another ten years. We will see. Besides the BFGs have a reputation also. Time will tell if I am one of the lovers or the haters.
