according to the haynes manual, the rotor and hub are separate pieces. tried till i was ready for dynamite to get them off, no way will they come apart. tapped between the studs with a 2 pound hammer, and on the back of the rotor with the mallet. not sure if i should use any solvents or even what would work. once again this thing has made me hate working on it. any suggestions?

Gimme 10 minutes, I'll edit this reply with some info.

Edit:
Some entertainingly unhelpful info here:
REMOVAL
(1) Raise and support the vehicle.
(2) Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
(3) Remove the caliper adapter (Fig. 30). (Refer to 5 - BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/DISC BRAKE CALIPER ADAPTER - REMOVAL).
CAUTION: Never allow the disc brake caliper to hang from the brake hose. Damage to the brake hose will result. Provide a suitable support to hang the caliper securely.
(4) Remove the disc brake rotor.

Neither text nor diagram indicate separating the hub from the rotor, but I might just be dense. And where it says to "refer to 5", is just a long explanation of brakes, difference between drum/disc, torque specs, and the checklist to run through from brake problem solving. This is from the 02KJ service manual, which should cover yours (next big change comes for 05). When the instructions indicate remover the tire and wheel assembly, I'd be tempted to wonder if that doesn't apply to the hub, but diagrams all show the 5 bolt donut still in place while all the brake work is being done. I'd have to guess it's married.

i called the 800 number in the haynes book. they hooked me up with one of their "researchers". they called back and said the rotor and hub were separate. i can't believe they're rusted together. there's less surface rust on it than i expected to find. if they were two pieces i should have seen some movement with all the banging i did on it.

Good you got a 'real' answer...
post up pics if you get a chance, I'd like to see how this goes.

i assume through your research you've realized that they are bolted together so i'm gonna skip that step. now get some JB-80, spray it down and take a hammer and punch to it. if that won't work use a torch to heat up the outer piece and watch it drop off like a leech.

the only nut is the one holding the hub to the axle. beyond that i can see nothing holding the rotor on. i don't want to have to pull the hub. i just want to get the rotors turned or replace them if necessary. and what id JB-80? never heard of it.

well theres your problem. the hub has to come off so you can get to the bolts holding the rotors to the hub. JB-80 is a rust penetrant spray. if you want to take the jeep somewhere and have them use an on-car brake lath you can do that as well.

Are there any threaded holes on the "hat" of the rotor? If there are, find yourself a couple of bolts that fit them and thread them in until they "push" the rotor off of the hub.

CJ hub and rotors are bolted together. the 87-90 use the wheel studs to hold the rotor on. That tip is for the second type and won't work on your CJ but it will on the Liberty. They usually pop right off but some can be stubborn so use a low grade bolt so it strips before the rotor.

He had posted in the Libby section, so I had assumed he was talking about that. You're right on the CJ parts.

Well, he is working on - and cursing at - a Liberty.
Hey, I did what I know how to do, which is look up stuff.
Beyond that, you don't want my help, trust me.

Yup. You're now an official Liberty 'expert'. All your remaining Jeeps have to have makeup mirrors installed on the visors now. It's too late. You're doomed.

LOL, a libby expert. oh well, i do know how to work on cars so its not too big a stretch. poor libertys need brake jobs too.

found a good solution for the problem, a local mechanic, recently unemployed because of chrysler's downsizing. he worked mostly on Jeeps, knows the Libertys inside out, works cheaper than the dealer, keeps me from breaking anything and costing more, and the neighbors won't have to listen to me going ape$hit anymore. everybody wins.
