Just added a K&N kit which is nice, what kind of upgraded plugs and plug wires should I get? When going up hills (paved roads) I get some minor engine knocking, I maintain my speed but my tranny does not seem to downshift, my RPM stay around 1700-1900. It still feels fine, and I goes just fine if I give some extra gas.

Any thoughts on this...is this par for 98 XJ (had it less than a month)? New to the Jeep world.

All replies welcome.....

Performance is key but gas mileage even more critical.

By the way "jdogg4", thanks for the info on the OME shocks. I have a full set on order....will let you know how they do! (N35 & N36)[/list]

for a 98 xj no i wouldn't say that is the norm (how many miles does it have?)
sounds like new plugs & wires would be a help if the old wires have mopar on them then they maybe orig equip. & should be replaced
(plugs & wires is up to you, i wouldn't go cheapest but mid price range is prolly ok)
also bet the dist cap & rotor button could be worn also & in need of replacemnt . aside from those it could be a sensor problem start w/ the air intake sensor, then on to the o2,
get yer self a Haynes Manual for your XJ to figure out how to get error codes that could lead you directly to yer prob. itll cost around $8 at most any autoparts & will become your best maintence tool (also a big time & money saver)

depending on your budget..........accell, moroso, msd are all good wires.....pretty soon i am upgrading to an all msd ignition, i have a CJ, but wires and plugs are wires and plugs......do not buy splitfire, it is all crap......bosch plugs are good, i run champion, autolite are ok for the money.........also if you go to jegs.com or summitracing.com you can find wire covers and stuff to match your cap/rotor or whatever, maybe even your ride.

JLANE99XJ,

Thanks for the info.....I'm gonna be looking at all of them this weekend.
I just bought a Haynes manual.......what do you mean when you say "to figure out how to get error codes "?

Money is always an issue but I don't mean that I necessarily need to be cheep. I just bought 4 OME shocks so I can't be that cheep!

Do you have any preferred/recommended brand that you have worked with. Everything on the vehicle is currently stock (as far as engine) except the K&N kit.

Thanks...also thanks to you too "goat" man.

in my manual its says for 91-97 models (which i believe includes 98-01 models also) if there has been an incident w/ the sensory sys. then a trouble code will be stored in the computer which can be retrieved by turning the key from OFF to ON to OFF to ON to OFF & then finally to ON ..then the check eng. light will start flashing count the flashes w/ a pad & pencil handy write dowen the #s flashed then lookup the meaning of that particular code...
the more i thought about this prob yer having w/ accelaration the more i believe it may be that yer TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) may be bad or having a fualt...

I tried to retrieve an engine code by following the steps you described. The engine light did not flash at all, it did come on but then turned off. Does that just mean that there are no current error code in the computer. Would a bad TBS not initiate an engine light on?

I did replace my plugs (used Champion) but I did not get a chance to check my distributor cap/rotor? I'll see wat kind of shape their in this weekend. Too much stuff going on! It does run better after putting the plugs in but still have some minor pinging (much less though).

I do have the same manual (mine covers through 2001). Thanks for the info.

well if you are pinging, your spark timing is definately off. for sure check your cap and rotor, and make sure u gappped the plugs right, not all plugs come gapped.
