can anyone help me out on fixing a valve knocking? is it just an ajustment or is it more than that? i hear it mostly at idle(maybe because it isn't so noisy in the jeep while not moving.) what do i need to make the adjustment? special tools? tricks? help!!!!!!! it's driving me nuts. I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Any other thoughts would be appreciated. It's a tick tick tick type noise. TIA.

Make sure it's a true valve knock. I thought I had one, come to find that it was an exhaust leak at the rear of the manifold. If you're not sure, take a piece of tubing or rubber hose and hold it to your ear. Using the other end, place it in various points on the engine. A valve/lifter knock will be heard loudest somewhere on the valve cover.
If it is a lifter, a thinner oil (5W-30) may help. I've been told that substituting a quart of Marvel's mystery oil or a quart of diesel fuel when changing the oil will help clean the oil passages and help lifters "pump up" faster. (run it for 500 miles and change the oil again).<-------- For the record, I've never tried this  One of the other members may be able to shed some light on this ;)
If it's a rocker arm, an adjustment may be in order. A broken/collapsed valve spring can also cause a tapping noise from the valve cover (you'd possibly have a burnt valve, but that's another story).
Are you sure its the valves? I have the same problem in my 92 4.0 (see old post 92 4.0). I don't think its the valves. Does it do it during the first 30sec from cold overnight start. Mine has to warm up for 30 to 45sec then it sounds like a deisel when ideling. I have had 3 mech listen to it all scratch there head but rule out valves, lifters, rods. I have heard that there is a wrist pin problem with the older 4.0 it may be its comming from there. If it is valves or lifters any of the snake oils should improve it some. I have tried all the oils with no help. I also had one place tell me they don't know what it is but it'scommon and when they rebuild the engines the noise goes away....wonderful.....
You don't seem to be getting much feed back so I will add more. You don't say if you have 4 cyl or 6 cyl. I know that 6 cyl has no adjustments whatsoever.

its "snake" oil, you wouldnt want to eat it, lol, just joking.
i used some berryman on my iron duke and it quieted it down, and i never heard the noise again....make sure you read the directions right, i believe ouare supposed to pour it in and then shortly after change the oil, but make sure you read directions...ask at your autparts store near by and they will be able to show you some different products, unless they are idiots, as at some point in our lives we run into.
