Steering

Hi. I just bought a 1982 CJ5. Driving down the road it feels like the tires need balancing, but my mechanic says the tires are fine and said it might be the steering. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions???

is the vehicle lifted? wiggle the tie rods......is there excessive play? has the steering stabilizer seen better days? make sure and check the obvious before spending too much money

Yep, just saw my mechanic and it is a tie rod!! Upper and Lower bearings on one side is gone too. Hopefully this fixes the probelm!!

thats a common problem on older vehicles...are u upgrading to something more heavy duty?

well if you are going to lift your vehicle and turn bigger tires, it might be a good idea to upgrade your steering components to handle the stresses of bigger tires and also if they are aired down......there are a few good kits out there, but dont let me tell you whats good, research a bit and see whut the good word is....or if ur a purist, replacement parts will do just fine..
