View Full Version : 350 Chevy Engine
Hi. I have a 1982 CJ5 with a 4cyl engine. I am considering going to a Chevy 350 engine. I would like to go with Fuel Injected and maybe keep the 4 speed. Can anyone make a recommendation as to the year engine I should be looking for and maybe what type of Chevy it came from (if that matters), any kits that may be needed and recommended transmissions?? Thanks
Jeff
The tranny could be either a T4 , SR4 or T176. The first two are margional W/a 6cyl. and wouldn't live behind a V8. Even though I'm probably in the minority on this, I would recommend a TBI engine, they have more than ample power for a CJ, are cheap, (both to buy & to swap) and have a lot less to go wrong on them. Look for a low milage unit out of a late 80s or early 90s truck or fullsize car.
Would a T-18 Tranny work okay?? Whats recommended for a transfer case??

gotta love the Dana300...........
Great. I can get a fully rebuilt 350 engine out of 68 Camaro - 4 Bolt Main, do you think this would go into the CJ5 okay?? I am trying to find out if I can put Fuel Injection on this engine.
The carb. 350 would go in OK, but, by the time you swapped FI on it, it would be much more expensive than just getting a TBI truck engine (most of which are 4-bolt mains, not that 4 bolt main caps are needed in a Jeep engine) The T18 is a very good tranny, but you would need an adapter to your Chevy, and another to the D300 ($$$$) If you want a 4spd w/granny low, I would suggest a SM465 or 420. They're cheap, strong, readily available, and best of all, come behind Chevy engines stock!! Check out the other 350 swap thread, much of this has been covered there.
