I have a 98 JGC developing a constant rear end howl at speeds greater than 20 mph. It has 113k and is a V8 4X4. I haven't noticed any thing different other than the noise. I have read about this on some other Jeeps but I could not find a definite cause. Any suggestions where to start?

I have done way too many of these too
Differental carrier bearings and change the pinion bearings while your in there.
Dont forget your seals and shims

And a inch lb., and a ft. lb. Torque wrench for bearing pre-load on the pinion shaft.
just pull that and put a 8.8 in it!!!!! :lhdevil:

yes, replace the pinion bearings but do not replace the shims. you probably wouldnt be in bad shape to just reuse the old crush sleve. i use a 4 foot pipe over a breaker bar to set the crush sleve. i bet you could just mark where the pinion nut is on the pinion, and put it back after replacement and be pretty close. oh, and its a ***** getting the carrier back in. good luck.

Thank you all. Everyone seems to have the same idea on other posts as well. My only thought was possibly bearings - it sounds more like a pulsing grating noise the closer I listen.

The new carrier shims will allow it to go back in without hammering it too hard.
Old bearing vs. New bearing

If your going to tackle the job yourself, I would recommend using a new crush sleeve so you can properly preload the pinion bearings. Make sure you mark the shims from the carrier left and right side and put them back in the same sides. Also check that you have in the ball park of 6-10 thou backlash between the gears and its never a bad idea to check the picture on the crown gear to make sure there is full tooth contact. If you dont set it up right, its possible the gear will howl at high speeds or it can end up braking on you. Maybe get yourself a manual if your not familier with this kind of work because there can be more to it than it sounds sometimes.
