Anyone know where I can get a tilt steering column for a 78 CJ5? I know they were offered as an option then but the dealer says they are discontinued. I heard of a junk yard called Scotty's 4X4's anyone heard of it? It is in CA

Hi, Scotty's is in Fontana, CA - don't know their #.
I know that Collins Bros in Wylie TX has a tilt - Dennis Collins is the man - wants $375 for it.
Good luck, Dan

You can go to flamingriver.com and look for their links. The right place is actually IDIDIT mfg. I bought mine about two years ago for $300.

You should be able to swap in a YJ column... the turnsignal selector is the same and the ignition is VERY similar if not the same depending on the year.
Also if your main goal is to keep the "sparetire"factor from interfering too much, go buy an aftermarket steering wheel. Measure the diamater of your factory steering wheel. You should be able to pick up a cheap Grant? wheel thats 2" smaller at Vatozone. I had to do this in mine after installing new seats that sat about 3" higher then stock. the new wheel made all the difrence in the world.. plus its more comfortable.

I got a Early to mid 70's Chevy floor shift column. The splined end is the same and it is about the same length(only about 3/4" longer).
You can got to Flaming River and see the stats there for a column, then compare to the Cehvy columns, I think it is a Camaro or Chevelle. Then check the Wrecking Yards.
I gave about $110.00 for the 1 I have from Ebay. Haven't got it in yet, still have body off frame.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but just how hard is it to replace my column with a tilt column? Is it just a matter of pulling my steering shaft and unbolting the column from its mounts?

The firewall mount is different, Otherwise it is pretty straight foward. You will have a plug to unplug under the dash and a few bolts.
