I have an 84 CJ7 with 9.50x15 tires a stock suspension that needs to be replaced as the leaf springs are getting weak. I plan to replace the springs with a 2.5" lift kit and go to 32" tires but don't want to adversely affect the ride or steering. I'm looking at lift kits from several companies: BDS, 4WD, Skyjacker, Trailmaster, etc.
Has anyone found a lift kit that will give a smooth ride and handling?

There are a lot of things to consider when deciding which lift kit to buy. Of the different brands you named I would say that Skyjacker would have the best ride. If you get thier 2-2.5 inch lift it should clear the 32s fine. I would stay away from Trailmaster as they tend to be very stiff. I like our brand of lift kit very much. It has good quality components but it will not ride as good as a Skyjacker kit. The springs are more durable and flex good. They will definetly maintain their ride height better than Skyjacker but you will sacrifice some ride quality to get those advantages. Just keep in mind if your CJ has worn out springs it really wont matter what brand of spring you go with it will make your ride stiffer. Springs that are worn out tend to have a very soft ride although it can affect the handling of the Jeep.

I have a BDS 2.5" suspension on my '85. At first, all new springs make for a bouncy ride. After a month or so they'll settle. When my BDS lift settled, the ride was perfect.
It didn't affect steering or change the drive characteristics one bit. I have 33s on it and have no issues.
