I'm new to this 4 wheel stuff.
I bought a 93 Cherokee Sport 4 door with a 4.0 High Output. Everything appears to be stock. The body and the interior are in excellent shape, it has 169,000 miles on it but starts and runs good, here?s the dilemma and question. As long as I am in 2 wheel everything is fine, but, when I put it in 4 wheel as long as I steer straight everything is fine and good, as soon as I turn the wheel the slightest either direction, OH my god the noise, sounds like the front end is going to fall off. Grinding, growling metal to metal sound, and extreme movement up, down, left, and right.
I took my Jeep to a garage and the mechanic told me it was either the carrier or the transfer case, being naïve, it sounded good to me. I was told it would run $1000 to $1200 to fix it. Well, here?s the thing, I went to the local AP store to get some wiper blades for it and got into a conversation with a gentleman that had a CJ5 with all the bells and whistles and told him what it was doing. He told me that if it was ok going straight, but made the noises when I turn its more likely to be a universal joint on the outer axels and should only be a couple of hundred to replace both sides. Any thoughts or suggestions on what it might be, and a direction to go from here would be helpful.
I would also like to put a lift on it, not an insane lift but about 3 to 4 inches, still keep it streetable and be able to go off road a bit, not rock crawling. I have looked at different manufacturer setups from Skyjacker to Rubicon. It look as if Rubicon?s is rather complete. In reading other posts I seen with this height I should be able to put 30 or 31s on it that?s good enough I think for now. What?s your opinion on this kit for completeness and would I get into hidden costs.
I want to go with a full rear spring pack kit. The question I have is. In all the posts in the forum I see people referring to 3? lift and 31 tires is that 31x10.5 or31x 9.5. Also they say max for a 3? lift, tire wise is a 30x 9.5 without trimming, what gets trimmed?. I would love to go to a 31x 10.5, I like the looks and the width better. Question is, can I use 31x10.5 as a bolt on set up with the Rubicon 3.5 lift (RE6030 3.5" XJ Super-Flex Kit), and what backspacing on the rims would be needed for the wider tires. Is there anything else steering wise needed for a 3? lift, because I have read that if you go higher you get into all kinds of modifications and I don?t want to lose drivability.
I took my Cherokee to an old school mechanic, we put the jeep on the lift and he turned the front wheel while in 4wd and we found the noise. It was coming from the transfer case. He suggested to try to find a good used one, so I guess that?s what I'm looking for is a good used transfer case for a 93 Cherokee XJ with a Dana 30 front and a 8 ¼ rear, it has a 4.0 motor. I don?t know what else would be needed for a match. If anyone has a good used one I'm interested in buying it, if the price is reasonable.
Can anyone tell me what years are compatible for parts interchange with my 93, I would like to start doing the junkyard thing for spare parts, but don?t know what years will fit. Things like the motor, trans, front and rear, and of course the transfer case

:Welcome:

Wow, that's a lot of questions for an intro! :drop: Patience grasshopper...if you're a true Jeeper you'll be working on it for the rest of your life. Bummer about the t-case. Good friend of mines' sister had to have hers repaired/replaced, cost her about $1200.

Search the board and you're sure to find much useful info.
