Hey guys been awhile. I have a long distance trip coming up and I don't think my 304 will do so well on the turnpike. I was hoping someone here may know about how much it will cost to put a chevy 350 & 5 speed trany in? Or if my 1974 CJ-5 will handle a 1400 mile trip with out?

Hey Seth you are a lucky Jeeper.... a 74 with a V 8 is a great Jeep.(Mines a 73 V 8) :cucumber: . I think the 304 will handle the trip with some limitations. You won t be able to go 75 or 90 MPH :7: all the way. You might have to add some oil once in awhile. BUT HEY YOU RE A JEEPER , we're in it for the adventure.
What I would be concerned would be YOUR BODY.....thats a lot of miles in a cramped short wheelbase vehicle.....have you driven even 100 or 200 miles in a stretch in one? Well you get out very slowly and unfold carefully so you don t break any parts of your body that you can t feel any more. What you might want to think about is if you can trailer it there.or at least flat tow it. Get a towbar..they work well ....and set up some tail lights on the back of yer Jeep and take off ! Oh one thing I think I d take out the drive shafts or at least disconnect the axle ends so you son t spin your transfer case/tranny al them extra miles.Sounds like a great trip if you can do some Jeepin in another area.

Just like any Jeep or AMC V-8, carry a set of combo wrenches, a gallon of 20/50 oil, a gallon of antifreeze & have a loud stereo. Cell phone optional.
Have Fun!

It cost me about $7,000.00 to put in a chevy 350 and turbo 350. That included everything including the oil. You could probable do it a lot cheaper but I beefed the engine up to about 340 HP. You can find a fully rebuilt motor with all the goodies inside for about $1100.00. Good luck it was a lot of fun and what a great sound that chevy V8 makes going down the highway.
