Hey guys,

I've got yet another leak in my 79 CJ 258. This time I'm leaking coolent out from underneath somewhere. I've looked over my water pump and it seems to be firm without any woble to it and all my hoses look to be in fairly good condition. Anyone have any suggestions on where this leak might be? I've got coolent dripping from the front two bolts of the oil pan just underneath the timing chain cover. I can only trace coolent up a couple of inches to where the lower crank case pulley obscurs everything. Would it be possible for me to lose my water pump gasket while the pump is still firm?

Thanks for your help

Matt...

Seeing water that low it could be comming from anywhere up hill from there.Try useing a paper towel (dry,it will suck up any water that is there) and slide it into the space between the thermastat and waterpump,if its dry move down to the space between the waterpump and the timming cover.Water runs down hill and will follow the seems of anything in its path. :)I have seen bad waterpumps that I couldn't wiggle at all. Good luck, let us know

More than likely your coolant is coming from a cracked freeze plug.
I had 2 that leaked on my '85 and when I had my engine rebuilt I changed them to brass plugs.
