View Full Version : oil and maintenance
ok guys. i want to change my oil because i don't know when the last owners did it. they didn't drive it but on the weekends. as you can tell from my signature what i've got. its got 118k miles by the way. i want to know how to change my oil, oil filter, and air filter. when should i change the filters, what brand filters should i get and what oil should i get? also, should i take it in or change it myself. even if i take it in i'm still gonna change it once so i know how. i crawled under it and saw the oil filter, its gonna be a mother to get out. what should i get and what should i do?

Get whatever oil you want, but I use castrol gtx high milage oil then grab what ever filter fits you best. I get the DG16 all the filters will say --16, but look it up when you buy it to make sure. Change the air filter while your at it, you dont know the last time that was changed. To change the oil crawl under it with a oil pan and take of the drain plug. Then once the oil stops draining remove the oil filter, with a oil filter wrench. (it'll be with the filters) When you undo the filter oil wil pour from that also, so have the pan under there also. Then put some oil on the seal of the new oil filter, and screw the filter back on. Use the wrench to tighten the filter. Then put the drain plug back into the pan and fill with the new oil. Everything you need to do it is at Wally World or any local parts store.
Good luck, I hope you do it yourself, it feels really good working on your jeep yourself, instead of having some chump down the street mess with it. If your still worried about it being to hard, buy a haynes automotive repair book (like 20 bucks), it'll be explained in there in better detail. It'll also help on other basic maintenance of the jeep, if you plan on working on it you need it. Dont worry either, its really easy. Everyone starts some where, I was there at one time. GO FOR IT!! PM me with any questions.

Go to your local book store and pick up a book on basic car maitenence you can learn a lot from them. As for oil I would use a higher mialege oil and atleast 10w30 maybe even 40 because of all the heat, depending on how bad your winters are you can go lower then. always do the work yourself then you know it will come out right and you get to pick the parts.
