since Jeep stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket", how much did you spend on your rig?
I bought mine for 3 grand
swapped a T5 for a T176- 1 grand
clutch- 200
drive shaft/universals- 300
corbeau seats- 350+
other odds and ends- 700-1000
all in all- 6000+
not a lot, but still a pretty penny.

Jeep 2001 XJ 19,000
brush guard 140
gas tank skid 6.50
R.E. liftkit 1,400
and about 200 in randome stuff for the jeep.
the brush guard and gas skid I got on the mopar page on sale after they discontinued make the XJ so no need to store up the parts and got them way cheap. the gas skid rocks and it was only 6.50
I have yet to get new tires and rims cause I just bought a house but I've been a good boy and hope santa pulls thru this year for me.

You know,
I never really gave it much thought up until I put that post up. Since then, I keep coming up with things that aren't on that list. I was outside looking at my jeep thinking "I can't fuc&^#$ believe that I've spent that much money". I was much happier whe I was ignorant about the subject. I think I'm with goat on this one, depressed.

I don't really care about the money as much as I do about the time put into my Jeeps. Rebuilding, rebuilding parts, adding parts, garage repairs and shop repairs. The time adds up faster than the money does. Once that time is spent you can't get more of it.

12-22-2002, 11:23 AM
For me, the time isn't the problem. It's not having the money to do it properly that holds me up. Once I have the money, I can find the time. I had my ride torn apart for 3 years while I worked on getting the money to rebuld it. Once I had the money, it took about 11 months to go from an empty frame to completely rebuilt. No Sir, when I have the money, time abounds.

The 95 I bought in 97 for around 11 grand. Yes I know too much. I still owed on my trade in. Then I put a new top $250.00 I got it second hand it is a Super top. Then came the 2" BL for $90.00. Of course as all Jeepers know with a lift comes other stuff. The AR 767 cost me $150.00 for all 5, I got three of them from someone esle who totaled their Jeep and only had three good 767's left. Then came the 31x10.5 Brigestone Dueler M/T's $695.00. Chaching. Plus all of the Kentrol stainless steel stuff. That comes to like $250.00 I figured in the steel horse crap that I am replacing. $12,435.00, Not as bad as I thougt.
The '01 TJ, bought it for 16,500.00 with 20,000 miles on it. Spent $360.00 for the lift. Haven't gone any further(yet). For a grand total of $16,860.00. Just Empty Every Pocket is right. I will end up spending almost that much on my Scrambler restoration project. I LOVE JEEPS. :D

 I would not know where to begin. Do I start with the day I drove it home $3000.00,or the time I had to pay the tow comp. $450 to get it off the sand dunes and then decided that since it needed axle work front and rear ($1500.00), NOW would be a good time to do a frame off?(another$300)And the tranny, trasfer case swap that followed.($600) Or how about now? I've got a wild hair to do a spring over with full width axles,or the new dash blank that is in my gun safe so it won't rust in the garage.(My wife wouldn't let me keep it in the house) I'm afraid to do the dash because then I'll need to call Painless and fix all the electrical gremlins that I've got. Or the.... I have no idea, I just know that I'm havin a ball

I don't get depressed about how much I spent. I mean, I'd rather spend it on the Jeep. Otherwise I would probably pick up a cocaine habit or go back to Pimpin', make the low rider(am I in the wrong forum) bounce, or just spend my time rolling naked in the wads of cash I would have lying around(ok now I know I've lost it). :D

bought it in 1995 for $7k. Routine maitenance over the years, new top, seats, clutch, Tires etc. about $4-5k. Approx. $2k for the engine swap.
so around 13k give or take.
Jeep - 5100
1st Spare tire - free (out of the barn)
2nd Spare tire - 15 (gave first spare tire to another jeeper)
1st Drive tire - 77 (finally used 2nd spare tire)
Axle bearing - 94
Slave cylinder - 320
Air filter (1-3) - 21
Distributor cap - 19 (and rotor)
plugs and wires - 30
3-1/2-20 nuts - .75 (spacers for spare tire so I could open rear hatch)
gastank patch - 5
new door strap - 7
footman loop - 3
cb parts - 40
hi lift jack - 25 (don't ask, it was a wierd day)
tow strap - free (work salvage)
shop manual - 15
tie wrap and electical tape - 20 (ok so i used alot of fasteners)
RTV - 15 (it had alot of holes, leave me alone)
air filter (bigger) - 18
locking lugnut removal - 10 (had to buy 4 new lugs nuts)
assorted stickers - 15 (and rising)
cork plug - .15 (to keep the license plate from rubbing the body)
gas cap - 4
tool box - 20 (neat quick fix, will get pix)
turnsignal switch - 40 (NOTE this is a pain in the ### to replace)
lock plate tool - 15 (needed to replace above, found this out after I
pulled the steering wheel off)
turn signal arm - 9 (was young and stupid and thought it was broke)
quick release pins - 8 (for the tow bar that goes on front)
switch - 3 (for fog lights)
I think that is it. I really didn't want to go much further or I might get depressed. LOL. It really has been an interesting 5 months since I bought it. (hence the saying "buying a new 89 YJ one part at a time). But I am not really bothered by all the stuff I have put into it, I love tinkering and it gives me something to do. I just wish I was back home where I had all my tools and a spare vehicle in case I needed a part once I got into something.

a good way of getting lock lugs off is just tack welding a nut onto them and then just use a wrench or socket to loosen it up.... i did this bc i cleaned out my console and accidently threw out the key, and i was at a friends house and he has a welder, took like 10 mins.....
-goat
Yeah, I was thinking along that lines, but the only person I know out here with a welder, live 45 miles away. The guy at the tire shop took a impact socket and drove it onto the locking lugnuts and then used a breaker bar to break them free and then loose. Convinced me so much about how useless those things are I went ahead and put regular lugnuts back on it. Took less than 1 minute to get all 4 lockers off.

Big Buro did I read that right 2400.00 in a Dana 30  :drop:
Big Buro
03-03-2003, 11:29 PM
Yeah, you read it right. The question was "how much" not "How smart" Actually, I thought I had gotten a really good deal. Here's my thinking at the time.
I bought an 81 CJ5 at a salvage auction for 700.00. I took the Dana 30 off of it and sold the rest for 300.00 (no engine, tranny, or t-case)
In my feable estimation, I just bought a perfectly re-buildable Dana 30 for $400.00. The only thing that I THOUGHT I would have to fix is the gears. It had 3:11's and I want 4:56's. No problem, $300.00 bucks, I do the work, I still end up with essentially a new D-30 for $700. NOW, I get into the case change $325.00, the right steering nuckle, $180.00, Then, the laft axle is warped, right axle is needs a new U-joint. Cheaper to replace both, $490. Had to machine the yoke to accept the 66 drive shaft, DUH!!!!! $100.00. SO then, I get it all back together. Done, happy, looks good, feels good, F%ckin thing doesn't work. What's wrong?????? Wrong case for the gears. What the hell that meant I'll never know but I do know, It cost me more money. FINALLY, I took the sonofa***** to my gramps. "YOU FIX IT". Three days later, I had my Dana 30.
So, if you just count the crap that I did use and not the crap that still sits in my garage, it's about $2400. Sucks, yes, but again the question was how much not how smart. If I had it to do over, I'd simply go to somone like Curry and get a new one. THEN, the sonofa***** wouldn't be 2 inches wider than the 44 on the back. I Love my Jeep but I wasn't the smartest when it came to rebuilding it. That's why it's, once again, in pieces in my garage. Too much, Too fast. Gotta do it again.

I thought I had the lowest price jeep in here till I started thinking about it. 300 for the jeep 4000 for the car I had to buy my wife for trading off her junker on the jeep 2 clutches and I dont remember what I spent on them. Had the tranny out several times at least 3 pilot bearings. Got a rebuild kit for 50 bucks. would have spent another 100 on shafts and bearings but a friend did some machine work for me instead that was a couple six packs. a bunch of sand paper 20-50? I had the paint left over. Several rolls of wire maybe 50 with connectors. 400 for extra running gear I havent used. Tires and wheels 500. was lucky enough to find some short wiper blade arms at napa 20?. I bought a couple air fittings 10? but the Pipe for the front bumper was salvaged scrap. Engine rebuild kit 300. 5 for needles to sew a back window in salvaged from a boat top. Made a bikini top from the boat top too strapping and snaps 20. 300 for a winch at auction, anyone want the chrome pickup bumper it was on lol. I know one of you has a junkyard /wrecking yard no offence. man would i like to be your buddy lol. anyway it would be nice to have 10k to throw at it but I have a great time Jeeps are built not bought

I know!!! I know!!! LOL OK so daddy bought you a jeep for I think you said $2700 but that may have been to much with all the problems that it has. Im sure by the time you get brakes and a good suspention and oh what fun your going to have fixing a the electrical problems. By the way did you pay for the tires you stuffed under it.
PS Do you have to pay daddy back? I'm sure if you keep it it will be into you pockets often over the next couple years. Good luck
dh_4_ever
03-16-2003, 09:42 PM
yeah i know, geat for me. The tires came with it, the biggest it could fit, with stock equptment. All the parts for it wont be a problem, dads paying for it again. Electrical? HA...I rewired a pontiac sunbirst from bumper to bumper last year(engine's electrical, sound system, dash, lights, every wire I re-did), little jeep head lights are no problem. and I dont have to pay a single cent back. Its a easy project car. am I spoiled? of couse. and im loving every second of it. Though to be realistic, I do spend all my money on my bike...so my parients are willing to pay for my car. (Im a profesional MTB here in BC, gota love the sport...DH, DJ, Freestyle, I do it all...and thats my ownly pasion in life..other than building web pages for cash)
