Post,
I have a 2000 WJ with the same engine and if I fill it up a little past capacity, I average 320 miles and 80% of that is city driving. I took a four hour trip once and I averaged 410 miles, but it was all cruise control.
I never use my full-time 4 wheel drive unless I need it. I doubt there are any fuel consumption problems with it, but I dont like hearing the chain bind and I feel like I lose hp using it. As far as commen problems are concerned, the factory brakes and rotors are crap and dont go 4 wheling in water up to your axle (personal experience). Jeeps electrical systems arent as forgiving as Chevys.
i've got the 95 gc orvis, which is basically limited. i've the 5.2L so i get 13mpg. yes it's that bad. but you have the 4.0 which shouldn't be too bad. i've got all time 4x4. it's not a problem, you just can't turn too fast (personal experience). i love it. by the way mine has 118k miles on it. i'd check the brakes though, mine were about to pop out the were so worn down when i got mine. i'd also take it to a simple mechanic and have him do a general check-up. such as transmission and oil leaks, electrical, etc. etc. i'd have to recommend it.

My 95 GC Laredo w/ K&N all time will get about 15 city...when im easy on it i can get 17 city but thats no fun....drove across South Dakota once and got 25. Thats stock height and tires. K&N prob helps though. The all time is nice cept when turning as already said....Ive heard good and bad things about the 4.0. Good in wranglers ok in cherokees and not so hot in GC's. Just depends on how heavy your foot is
