Hello fellow jeepers, I just got a 1955 CJ-5 with the Four cylinder "Hurricane" engine in it about a month ago. Its in pretty rough shape as far as the tub goes. I hope ya'll don't mind me asking a few questions??? First thing is on the transfer case, where the rear yoke exits the case, it has a pretty good oil leak. Well, I removed the yoke and found a couple of felt gaskets, Is this the only oil seal there is or am I missing a piece? Is there a seal up inside the case I can't see? OK, as far as I can tell, the engine compartment is all stock. It has the oil bath air filter. I personally have never messed with one of these so, I took it apart too cleaned it and seen on the bottom of the canister, a line, with "OIL LEVEL", do I put oil in there up to this line? Or, do I wait untill it fills up to this line with oil and empty it? As far as I can tell, the running gear and engine are in real good shape, other than a few leaks. I put a compression test on it and, had 135lbs in every cylinder. I do hear valve's tapping, Is there a way to adjust the exhaust valves without pulling the head? What's the best way to adjust both, Intake and Exhaust valve's? Well, I've taken up enough of ya'll's time but, If ya'll can help me, I would really appreciate it. Thank You. Rob

Hi Rob Welcome, you can ask all the questions you like here someone is bound to know the answer. There should be a seal that rides on the output yoke on the Dana 18 transfercase then there may be a felt seal
behind the nut on the yoke. You need to add oil to The air cleaner up to the oil line. The 135 LBS compression is good for the ol motor and you can adjust the lifters from the top just pull off the valve cover and check the valve lash between the rocker arm and valve and adjust to the spec. Im not sure what that is but I can check my book and post it later.

Well, I pulled the valve cover off the engine a few minutes ago and, the only valves I can adjust is the intake. Where/how would you adjust the exhaust valves? This engine is the 4 cylinder "Hurricane". I guess the next thing I buy, other than a valve cover gasket, is a shop manual. T I A, I really appreciate the help. Rob

I haven't had to adjust the valves yet on mine, but I believe there is an access plate for the exhaust valves on the side of the engine. The exhaust valves are in the block. Not the heads. Its raining cats and dogs here so sorry, I'm not going out to check right now ;)
The oil in the oil bath filter acts like a filter. better than a paper filter, but can be messy to deal with. Oh yea, do you still have the steel wool looking stuff in the top of the filter?

Terminated is correct,
Thereis a valve cover on the side of the eng to adjust the valves.
