  • CJ harness

I have a 79 CJ-7 that I am building. It has the 258 with 3 speed and no emissions or crazy electrical components. I replaced the dash and harness from an 82 or 83 cj. When I went to hook up the engine compartment harness it did not match. I have been looking and all the harnesses I find are like my original one. Instead of the corners of the plug being completely squared my new one is notched. The dash harness does not have a computer or anything like that. Has anybody ran into this problem or how many different factory harnesses are there?

I replaced my 76 harness with an 84 wiring harness, As you found out the plugs on the fire wall do not match. I just replaced everything from the dash to the engine. There are plenty of wires in the 82/83 harness to mach anything you need on the 79 engine. And quite a few extra!

LAying them out side to side is the quickest way to find the right plug. THey even kept the same colors on most of the wiring.

As far as I can tell. there seems to be 2 major designs of the harness. There are many small changes throught the different years.

Here is an 84 harness. All the 80s are simular:

Here is a little more detail on the 80-84 connector:

The detail for the 79 plug is in this document I put together.:

Does anybody know where I can locate a harness to fit? I attached a photo to show what the plug looks like.

Does anyone know where the horn comes off of on the firewall side. My horn hasn't worked in quite some time.

I am also tring to figure out how to hook up my reverse and 4x4 lights of of my T-5 D300 I have the plugs off of the transfer and trans that are from an 84 harness and I switched the rest of the wireing over to the 1980 style harness under the hood and under the dash. I just can't figure out what to cut and splice!

              Any help?

How the heck did I miss the stinking horn in both diagrams.

It's #45 in the picture above. A red wire with trace.

And then I blew it in the text document also.
