What kind of tranny fluid does an sr4 take?

  • #2
    fluid

I always ran 80w-90 in mine, as thats what was in it from the PO. However after reading the link on the T-5 and T-4 needing dextronII, I may be wrong. If you plan on doing any serious wheelin' or putting in more power, I'd say swap out the SR4 first. They don't hold up well and are hard o get parts for, although 4WD Hardware does carry some.

Standard gear lube 80W95 would be fine. I would not run the 85W140 unless you are in a hot climate or its a summertime toy only. The thick stuff will make for hard cold weather shifting. Only the later model T4&T5 use the DextronII auto fluid.

I agree with Hill Bill E. What engine do you have? I think some of the 258's came with the SR-4 behind'em. Get rid of it. Even the 4 cyl's will give the SR-4 a run for it's money sometimes. (We had the 151 Iron Duke) Now with a 307 SBC, we have to baby it until we have the moolah for a more rigid tranny.
