  • Difference between a cj5 and a cj7

What is the difference, I've heard width and length, is this true? All I know for sure is the door jambs are different, Also is there common problems in the two to look for when shopping for one.

  • #2
first the cj5's are shorter than the cj7's. in 72 cj5's were lengthened 3" from a wheel base of 81 inches to 83.5", which is how they came from 1972-1983. Cj5's never had automatic transmissions, the cj7's had that option. in 1983 widetrac axles were offered in the cj7's. 10" is the main difference between the 5's and 7's.
the CJ7 is easier to find a tub to swap if you have a rotted one, and has more room, bigger door opening, ect.

I have a 5, and there is not much room in it, so space is precious.

Rust is a common problem that you will find in almost every cj.

Also, I see there are plenty of 6 cyl's out there, but what does it take to drop a sbc into one?

Thanks to BrianABE I have a some what complete list, but here is the link to his build. There is alot of info on what he has purchased/needs for a sbc conversion.

        http://forums.4wd.com/kyoung_4wdforu...ad.php?t=28573

you will need: motor, motor mounts, header for exhaust, radiator (3or 4 core), (Assuming that you will keep your tranny) bell housing, flywheel, clutch disk, release bearing, ect ect.

        search is your friend.

I thought '80-'83 had chrysler TF 999 auto as an option, with a dana 300 behind it.

I am pretty sure they did not put an automatic in cj5's, due to the short wheel base. Here is what I referred to.

Like most manufacturers Jeep/AMC/Willys used alpha-numeric combinations for the models they were developing and producing. They really took it farther than most as they never actually named the vehicles now known as Wranglers until 1987. Up until then they were sold under the same names they were developed as.

The models we all know and love. Typically this is what most non-jeepers refer to Jeeps as, even if it's a TJ. A 1980 CJ-7 Golden Eagle was what our beautiful friend Daisy Duke drove. In 1980 the hubs went from Warn Premium to plain vanilla! The factory 8 cylinder motor was eventually killed by emissions and gas mileage in 1981. Also in 1981 the hubs went from 6 bolts down to 5, cheaper to make? Bolt pattern is 5 on 5.5".

No auto CJ-5s. If you ever seen one it was a swap. I just did a T176/D300 swap in mine and my D/S is only 15". haha An auto would be shorter than that.
