  • White Smoke and higher rpm's at idle

My AMC 360 Has White smoke spewing from the left exhaust pipe. Not the
right, It has Dual straight pipe exhaust so I know its coming from only one
    side of the engine.
Ive already read through this thread
    http://www.4wd.com/kyoung_4wdforums/...ht=white+smoke
And nothing seem's to match. Possibly lost a cyl?

And It has been idling at a higher rpm than usual. Carb checks out, any other idea's?

you have either a cracked head, or a cracked head gasket. might also possibly be a valley pan issue but i'm not positive if that would cause your problems. has the engine been run hard or over heated recently?

Great thing about 8's is they are easy to tell which side is bad.

Continuing question, Finnaly got time this weekend to take it apart, There were
Hard plastic/metal pecies floating around in the pan under the intake manifold
Continued to take apart the head, Took it off, Alot of coolant leaked everywhere
but the head and cylinder's checked out. Kind of at a stand still now

without seeing it, that sounds like head gasket material in the valley pan. you would need to at least hot tank and possibly magnaflux the head to really see if there is a crack. a dirty visual inspection is not reliable.

Check out the piston heads. If you were burning antifreeze you should be able to see it on the piston head.

There was antifreeze in three of the four piston's.

That could have come from when you pulled the head. Antifreeze eats the alum piston, if it was doing it for some time you should see it most pronounced. Otherwise it should be some deterioration on the ones that were burning it.

plus, if it were leaking enough into three pistons, you would have probably gotten hydro lock from it when starting the motor. it probably was only leaking in while under pressure from the engine running. anythings possible though. head gaskets are fairly cheap and with the material in the valley pan i would start there. not much time involved with pulling a head and putting it back whole.

Pistons check out, Will definatly look into getting the head cleaned and figure out
what is in the valley pan. Thanks

post a pic of what you found in the vally
it sounds like you had a head gasket leaking at on of the cyl.
you dont hear to much of cracked heads on amc motors like you did on chevy back in the late 70's to early 80's
