  • Power Steering Conversion 76 Cj5

Im trying to convert my 76 258 to power steering using the pump and box
from my 77 cj7. My problem is the pulley I got from the junkyard for the
water pump is not offset enough, and the one from the cj7 is for a 304
and a lot bigger in diameter. Has anyone done this conversion?

YOu shouldn't have any problems it you find the correct pully. Everything else should fit.

      Jeep Unlimited

Try giving Jeep unlimited a call at 303-828-9020. I had the same problem with my '78 and they were able to ship me the correct pulley for around 15 bucks.

If your diameter becomes the last issue, belt circumference (in respect to pulley diameter) is insignificant--adjustment will usually take care of it. The resulting pump speed is usually insignificant, too--unless the diameter is nearly 50% off.

when i went from a 258 to a 304 i had similar issues. the 258 pump will not fit in a 304. you'll need to get a 258 pump and possibly swap the fittings in it to match your box/hose.

I got my pulley from advance. they had a book showing them. make sure to measure the backset from tip of shaft hole to pulley.
