  • The "closed" axle.

Can one of you tell me the dependability, durability, and practicality of the closed front axle--as I believe, it is the 27.
    'Ppreciate the info.

The closed-knuckle D27 gets has a bad rep, but it's not deserved. It is 3" more narrow than an NT D30. Properly maintained, which is a little bit more involved than a 30, it's about as strong as the 30 if you do the knuckle stud conversion.
See info on www.earlycj5.com on how to do that conversion.
The 27 is fine with 31s, will be OK with 33s if careful with the skinny pedal.
The 27 is easy enough to upgrade the brakes to 11" drums or disc; again how-to at earlycj5.com

The main draw back is the steering radius. You get increased turning radius with the open knuckle 30. Draw backs on that is you can snap axles when wheelin if accelerating hard at sharp turns.

Thanks guys, I believe I dislike it already, even if it has a better ratio.
I like my open radius--actually it's not enough.
I am also tired of conversions.
All the same, thanks for the input.
