I have been doing alot of research on this and I understand pretty much any CJ tranny will work on a 4.0L( From 95 XJ). My CJ has a T-4 but I might end up using a T-176 but anyways as far as making it work I know I need a pilot bushing ..apparently the 4.0 is different from the 258 and I read that advance adaptors makes one? The one thing I dont understand is do I use a clutch for the tranny im going to use(which makes sense) and it will work fine with the 4.0L flywheel?I also read that a 4.0L flywheel is narrower than a 258 and if this causes a problem(if it does matter) will a 258 flywheel work? Thanks for the help.. there is alot of info out there on this subject but it can be very unclear and some just wrong. Thanks agin!

You may want to look at the AX15 and adapting that to the Dana 300. Often cheaper that way, and the 15 is stronger than the T4/5 while still giving you an overdrive gear you will not have with the other transmissions.
I thought the 4.0 didnt fit the older 258 transmissions?

i agree with gryphon, the AX-15 is stronger and easier/cheaper to mate up. AX-15 is an easy shifting tranny in comparison to the T-176, and pretty much as strong or stronger, plus overdrive.

You will need pilot bushing and either clutch will work. You will need 4,0 flywheel for cps sensor ou will need to change cps sensor to ft of eng at damper.I modified my bellhousing the first time for sensor . MY lower end let go after 6 months than installed reman from host with advanced atp bellhousing.. There is some good infro out there is a fairly easy swap and wireing is not that hard . Don't give up keep asking if need to will keep eye on site .
