Sorry, no pics yet. Just diagrams.

I do have the cutlass, but don't dress in the pirate garb, sorry. I haven't thought about naming, but anything to do with pirates just doesn't seem to fit my nature. I'll ponder it.

So Chip, yer wantin' to play Gilligan? As far as the bourbon thing... where is that island where all the rum is buried? That works for me (I saw that in a movie, so it must be real).

Still no response from the current owner, but the surveyor is standing by... just hanging on pins and needles waiting to see if I'm a sailor or still a ground pounder.

Don't know the movie, but it's worth a search.

I think he got it on approval.

OK, to be clear, it is sight-unseen, a pig-in-a-poke, but I have the chance to walk away from the deal if I choose after looking at the boat, so that would be 'approval' I guess.
Movies... Captain Ron is great (I love the eye-patch flipping routine), and I also recommend Cabin Boy, although it's more Monty Python style (some of the folks from the python troupe).

Making progress now. Managed to talk with the marina owner where the boat is berthed... and arranging for the survey. Funny, the marina owner asked me how much I paid, and when I told him, he was surprised, said a friend of his boat a similar boat for $12k not long ago, and still had to put an engine in it.
I'm going to remain cautious about my enthusiasm, but things are looking up. At least I know the bilge pumps are working (marina requires them... seems worldwide, most boats sink at the pier, not a surprise really, since most boats like this are at the pier most of the time).
If it checks out, and I can get this thing safely to Arkansas, I can berth it on the river at 1/10th the cost of anything here on the east coast.

Tom, name her 'Murphy's Law' . . . LOL Come to think of it, I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is bad luck to change a boat's name. What's the name of the boat now?

I'm going to have to bow out on Joel's plan to sail with you guys. I have zero sea legs. I have left more chum in the ocean than a shark fisherman.

And what's all this talk of a motor? Buffett tells a cool story about an interview with a journalist. The interview is to take place on Buffett's sailboat during a two hour outing. When the journalist arrives at the slip, Buffett is packing enough groceries for a week. The journalist said, 'I thought we were only going out for two hours.' Buffett said, 'The last two hour outing turned into three days and all I had on board was a can of vienna sausage and some saltines.' Of course, that's a paraphrased story, but you get the idea.

Buffett doesn't have a motor on his sailboat either.

And we were planning on you bringing the Vienna sausages!
I don't think this boat has a name currently... at least I don't see one on the transom photo. I was thinking about naming it something Scottish, not only for my heritage, but also as a hat tip towards the pirates (since most of the famous pirates were Scots).
The motor is currently an inoperable diesel. It is handy to have it working for dock maneuvers, etc. But sail is the way to fly. The only way to go really... costs nothing but the wind.
This is likely to be a real adventure. Hopefully that's a good thing. We'll see.

Default A final update on the "bad thing"

Well, as it turns out, the sweet deal was like all deals of it's nature - beset by complications.
In this case, the boat (I think I mentioned it was really large as only a sailboat can be) was bigger than the equipment at its marina could handle... meaning that to have it inspected, which requires hauling it out of the water, it had to be sailed across NY harbor to a facility with large enough equipment. Lacking a functioning motor, that's not as easy as one might think.
At any rate, caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, I have returned the title and declined the sale (recission that's called).
I'm disappointed, but it's just as well. I was very uncomfortable with the terms of acceptance as they developed.
Now I don't get to use my new smily that I found, either, darnit!
